A polar atmosphere envelops the runways with revolutionary collections that seek to establish their place in the new era of fashion, where some designers are positioning the industry as one of the most important channels for activism and political expression; others seek to create pieces with a fairytale feeling to it, while others remain neutral in their political standpoint and realistic in their fashion sense. Others want to resuscitate the glory of fashion in past decades. Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director for Louis Vuitton, fits in the first category. He presented his collection at the Cour Marly in the Richelieu wing of the Louvre museum in Paris, known for its multicultural character. According to the designer, “Being in the Louvre where everyone is welcome, where there is no limit of culture, of nationality, is a strong message.” Bottega Veneta’s Tomas Maier described his runway as a silhouette inspired by illustrations with strong shoulders and cinched waists that are reminiscent of the 1940s. Karl Lagerfeld wanted to create a sober look for Fendi this season, a “grownup chic” aesthetic for his ready-to-wear collection that conveyed classiness combined with bold sheer pieces. And while Lagerfeld didn’t want to create a

“fairytale,” it was exactly what Elie Saab was looking for with his array of dramatic princess dresses inspired by medieval “fallen kings, defeated by a fearless and heroic sisterhood…bright and brave warrior queens they were, are, and forever will be.” The collection is bold and modern, ready to seduce fashionistas, immersing them in a world of fantasy.
