Al compensar a los pescadores al valor de mercado por la carne de tiburón que comerciaban, se interrumpen las prácticas de pesca y desarrollan capacidades a través de capacitación en preservación y ecoturismo. Actualmente, los pescadores ofrecen actividades de ecoturismo y conservación, con el objetivo de aumentar sus ingresos y al mismo tiempo salvaguardar a los escualos y promover su valor para el ecosistema y la economía. Crean el Parque Nacional Bajos del Norte Por otra parte, para proteger los arrecifes y permitir el uso sustentable de los océanos y recursos marinos en el Golfo de México, fue decretado el Parque Nacional Bajos del Norte, la primera ANP 100% marina. Oceana, organización dedicada a la protección de los océanos, celebró el decreto del gobierno mexicano, que incluye 1 millón 304,114 hectáreas marinas protegidas, convirtiéndose en la ANP más grande de esa zona. Ubicado a 140 km de la costa de Yucatán, contribuirá a la recuperación de especies comerciales como el mero rojo, el pulpo y la langosta espinosa. Esta nueva ANP conecta con el Parque Nacional Arrecife Alacranes. Juntas, estas superficies formarán un corredor de conservación y un refugio para especies amenazadas como tiburones y tortugas, y favorecerá la migración de cientos de especímenes marinos de la zona, contribuyendo así a la salud y abundancia del océano.
