The Spanish navigator Juan de Grijalva, was the first explorer in Mayan Riviera. He was amazed by the Mayan navigating skills and by the many coastal towns. The wise Mayan culture has always taken good care of the environment. Some attractive and sustainable ports are, Paamul a Pre-Hispanic cargo port, Tankah Ecological Park, a possible archaeological remains settlement, and Aak-Bal, the largest tourism development in the Mexico’s South East and a sea turtle sanctuary.
