·amura· 73 Sports • Sports The quest to conquer these mountains stirs the heart and soul of mountaineers, who throughout history have always found new feats to conquer. Whether it is the Himalayas, home to the world's 14 highest peaks over 8,000 meters ("eight-thousanders", or the Seven Summits of the continents, they appeal to the sense of global adventure. The Himalayas are home to the planet’s highest peak, Mount Everest (29,029 ft), alongside K2 and Kangchenjunga. Here, extreme altitude, freezing temperatures, and technical difficulties combine to test mountaineers' physical and mental conditioning—all enveloped in the region's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The Seven Summits, which also include Everest, feature Aconcagua as the highest peak at 22,841 ft in South America, Kilimanjaro in Africa and Vinson in Antarctica, among others. All challenge the versatility of climbers in different climatic and geographic conditions.
