La mezquita, ubicada en la ciudad de Bandar Seri Begawan, fue construida a mediados del siglo XX y es considerada una de las más hermosas muestras del arte islámico en Extremo Oriente. Representa es todo un símbolo de la fe islámica en Brunéi y es el edificio más característico emblemático de la urbe. Cabe destacar que lleva el nombre del 28° sultán de Brunéi uno de los hombres más ricos del mundo. El estilo arquitectónico del edificio es una combinación de elementos propiamente islámicos con inspiraciones de arte italiano. Los planos fueron elaborados por Booty y Edwards Chartered Architects, según los diseños del arquitecto italiano Rodolfo Nolli. Su cúpula está hecha de oro puro y puede distinguirse prácticamente desde cualquier punto de Bandar Seri Begawan. En cuanto a su minarete principal, éste constituye el punto más alto de toda la ciudad; se eleva a más de 50 metros y los visitantes que profesan la fe islámica pueden acceder a su cima a través de un ascensor, y es la parte que mayores elementos italianos y renacentistas incorpora, algo único en cualquier comparación con otra mezquita del mundo. Cuenta con otros minaretes de mármol blanco coronados también con domos dorados, patios con jardines repletos de fuentes, flores y árboles... una representación islámica del Cielo. El Sultán Omar Ali Saifuddin a la que quien está dedicada la mezquita, dirigió los designios del sultanato durante 35 años, siendo, además, el dirigente gobernante que logró la independencia del Reino Unido en la década de los 80. Dos años después, en 1986, falleció. La mezquita del Sultán Omar Ali Saifuddin está construida sobre un estanque artificial cerca de la orilla del río Brunéi Aquí se ubican dos puentes, uno que cruza hasta la villa acuática de nombre Kampong Ayer y otro de mármol que asemeja un barco –que es una réplica de la que usaba el sultán Bolkiah en el siglo XVI– que se utiliza utilizado para ceremonias oficiales. It has other white marble minarets also crowned with golden domes, courtyards with gardens full of fountains, flowers and trees... an Islamic representation of heaven. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, to whom it is dedicated, directed the designs of the Sultanate for 35 years and was also the leader who achieved independence from the United Kingdom in the 80s. He died two years later, in 1986. The Mosque of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Sultan is built on an artificial pond near the bank of the Brunei River.
