Otro de los cuentos más famosos de este autor es “La sirenita”, cuya adaptación cinematográfica de 1989 ha llegado a todo el mundo. Pero para sorpresa de muchos, esta nueva versión del cuento tuvo varios cambios en su desarrollo. La sirenita del cuento original no se casa con el príncipe ni viven felices para siempre como en la película. En vez de eso, la sirenita muere y su espíritu se convierte en aire; logra ser inmortal. La esencia del personaje principal se conservó así como también sus aspiraciones, pero mientras que Disney optó por cambiar el final para que la sirenita pudiera vivir feliz para siempre con su príncipe, Andersen trata de demostrar con su desenlace que a veces aunque no se consiga el final feliz deseado, no significa que no habrá uno igual de gratificante. But to many readers’ surprise, this new version of the story went through several changes in its development. The little mermaid in the origi- nal story doesn’t marry the prince or live happily ever after like in the movie. Instead, the little mermaid dies and her spirit becomes air, thus achieving immortality. The essence of the main character was preserved as well as her aspirations, but while Disney chose to change the ending so that the littlemermaid could live happily ever after with her prince, Andersen tries to demonstrate with the story’s outcome that sometimes, even if the coveted happy ending is never fulfilled, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be an equally rewarding one.
