V ikingo es el patronímico con el que mejor conocemos a los pue- blos germánicos originarios de Escandinavia, una región for- mada en su mayor parte por los países que hoy conocemos como Suecia, Noruega y Dinamarca. La población vikinga se concentra- ba principalmente en las contemporáneas zonas de Estocolmo, Gotemburgo, Oslo, y en el territorio danés durante los siglos VII al XII –una etapa conocida como la Edad Vikinga. A lo largo del Siglo IX, las pequeñas monarquías que dividían Escandinavia fueron unificadas en tres reinos: Suecia, Noruega y Dinamarca, cuya distribu- ción distaba –territorial y geográficamente– de sus características actuales. Las evidencias históricas indican que fueron los daneses (como también se les conoció), quienes comenzaron las incursiones vi- kingas a partir del 793. En el año 810, ya tenían un poderoso ejército y una flota de 200 barcos, coman- dados por el rey Godofredo I de Dinamarca; quien se enfrentó a Carlo Magno. Las invasiones vikingas se acrecentaron a partir del año 835. V iking is the patronymic with which we recognize the Germanic peoples that originated in Scandinavia, a region conformedmostly by the countries that we know today as Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The Viking population was concentrated mainly in the contem- porary areas of Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, and the Danish territory during the seventh to twelfth cen- turies—a period known as The Viking Age. Throughout the ninth century, the small mon- archies that divided Scandinavia were unified into three unique kingdoms: Sweden, Norway and Den- mark, although the distribution of their lands was far from its current characteristics—territorially and geographically. Historical evidence indicates that the Danes (as they were also known) were the ones that started the Viking raids from 793 and on. In the year of 810, they already had a powerful army and a fleet of 200 ships, commanded by King Gud- fred I of Denmark; who faced Charlemagne.
