Sin embargo, es preciso recordar que en el inicio del siglo XX estuvo a punto de extinguirse en este territorio, ya que apenas que- daban entre tres y cuatro parejas. Afortunadamente, a partir de 1926 se convirtió en una especie protegida, y la mejor noticia es que en la actua- lidad la especie está totalmente recuperada con una población de alrededor de 5.000 parejas reproductoras. Es imposible evocar al cisne sin relacionarlo con Dinamarca, donde es todo un símbolo cultu- ral; baste mencionar el cuento universalmente co- nocido de “El patito feo”, obra del genial escritor danés Hans Christian Andersen, quien además in- mortalizó al ave en otras narraciones como el Nido de los Cisnes : “Entre los mares Báltico y del Norte hay un antiguo nido de cisnes: se llama Dinamar- ca. En él nacieron y siguen naciendo cisnes que jamás morirán”. T he swan is considered one of the most beautiful birds in theworld. Since 1984, it is the national animal of Denmark. However, we must recall that at the beginning of the 20th century it was on the verge of extinction in this ter- ritory; there were only between three and four couples. Fortunately, since 1926 it has become a protected species, and the best news is that the species is currently fully recovered with a popula- tion of approximately 5,000 breeding pairs. It’s impossible to evoke the swan without associating it with Denmark, where it’s a cultural symbol; we only need to mention the universally known tale of the Ugly Duckling , by the great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who also immortalized the bird in other short narratives such as The Swan’s Nest : “Between the Baltic and the North Sea there lies an old Swan’s Nest, and it is calledDenmark. In it have beenborn, andwill be born hereafter, Swans whose names shall never die.”
