• Islandia tiene una población de unos 300 mil habitan-
tes, de los cuales la mitad vive en la capital de Reikiavik
y sus ciudades colindantes, en el suroeste. El
Aeropuerto Internacional de Keflavík se encuentra a
unos 50 km de la capital. Las tierras altas del interior
están deshabitadas (e inhabitables) y la mayoría de los
núcleos de población se encuentran en las costas.
•De acuerdo a la lista del Programa de las Naciones
Unidas para el Desarrollo, Islandia es el país más desa-
rrollado y seguro del mundo. Prácticamente es nula la
delincuencia, además de ser la nación conmenor riesgo
de sufrir un atentado terrorista.
•Lomejor es llevar ropa para todo tipo de clima, porque
dice un dicho islandés: “Si no te gusta el tiempo, espera
5 minutos”. El tiempo cambia muy rápido, por lo que se
aconseja llevar ropa impermeable, abrigo ó chaqueta de
invierno sobre todo si viaja en losmeses de junio-agos-
to. Imprescindible el traje de baño, por todos los lugares
hay piscinas termales, también lagunas naturales o ríos
con agua caliente.
•Los precios de alimentos y de bebidas son bastante
exagerados. El idioma islandés es bastante complica-
do, entonces hay solamente unos pocos que logran
aprenderlo bien.
•Lo aconsejable, si es que va a manejar, es contar con
un vehículo 4x4 para sortear piedras, y en algunos
casos, pequeños flujos de agua que puedan aparecer en
el camino. Si conduce, asegúrese de hacerlo con cuida-
do, en especial en los caminos de montaña.
•Aunque, a primera vista los islandeses parecen ser
fríos y estirados, son de hecho amistosos ymuy educa-
dos. La mayoría hablan un poco de inglés, especialmen-
te en las zonasmás importantes; no existe un tema real
del que alejarse en una conversación.

inhabitants; half of them live in Reykjavik, the capi-
tal, and the near cities of the southeast. The inter-
national Airport of Keflavik is located 50 km away
from the capital. The higher lands in the interior are
deserted (and are uninhabitable) and the majority
of the population centers are located on the coasts.

According to the list from the United Nations
Development Program, Iceland is the most develo-
ped and safe country in the world. Crime is basically
non existent, aside from being the nation with the
less risk of suffering from a terrorist attack.
•
The best thing to do is to take clothes for all kinds
of weather, since there is an Icelander saying “If you
don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes”. Weather is
constantly changing, so it is advised to take water-
proof clothes, a coat or winter jacket especially if
you travel in the months of june-august. A bathing
suit is a must; there are thermal pools all around, as
well as natural lagoons or hot watered rivers.

It is advised, if driving, to have a 4x4 vehicle to
overcome rocks and in some cases small flows of
water that could appear on the road. If you drive,
make sure to do so carefully, especially on the
mountain roads.

Food and drink prices are much exaggerated. The
Icelander language is very complicated, so there’s
only a fewwho manage to learn it well.
•
Even though Icelanders seem to be cold and
uptight at a first impression, they are actually
very friendly and educated. Most of them speak a
little English, especially in the most important
zones; there isn’t a real theme to get away from in
a conversation.
