Podríamos ser percibidos colectivamente como una criatura nadando contra corriente, insistiendo en nuestro derecho a sobrevivir, descubrir y comprender. Esta inquietud y deseo habita dentro de nosotros. Es en la manifestación de esta esencia humana y al promover el impulso básico de nuestra especie que descubrimos una explicación más valiosa del proceso artístico. Los eventos macro-históricos de notoriedad acadé- mica representan únicamente una fracción diminuta de nuestra historia colectiva. Lamicrohistoria (los sucesos mundanos del hombre cotidiano) forma un porcentaje mucho mayor de nuestro legado. Esta es nuestra ver- dadera crónica. El jardinero cuidando sus plantas, el pa- dre jugando con su hijo, el cocinero pelando una papa, todos cargan en sus hombros y manifiestan en sus in- teracciones la flama de nuestra verdadera esencia. Un individuo solitario debe reconocer que desempeña un rol en el amplio panorama de la postura humana. Al mo- verse a través e interactuar con la vida, está avanzando a la humanidad y escribiendo nuestra historia. El arte, entonces, sería mucho mejor abordado como un proceso filosófico de pensamiento, es un acto intelectual. Definitivamente, no se trata de regurgitar nuestro entorno a través de representaciones. Es una actividad mucho más natural en la cual todos partici- pamos al meramente experimentar la vida. El químico que hace un descubrimiento científico y publica un documento no puede ser considerado un “escritor de documentos”, se le considera un investigador cientí- fico que publicó un documento. Aunque su texto es la única parte de su trabajo que puede ser comparti- da, su proceso es la parte importante del producto. En esta misma luz, la pieza final que el artista puede presentar al público es la culminación de un proceso intelectual. Toda la perfección técnica del artista le servirá para agregarle un punto de exclamación a su emprendimiento conceptual y hacer el aspecto final de su trabajo más asequible, pero debe recordar que su tarea es aportar al agregado del intelecto humano. We could collectively be perceived as a creature swimming against the current, insisting on our right to sur- vive, discover and understand. This restlessness and desire lives within us. And it is in themanifes- tation of this human essence and the forwarding of the basic drive of our species that we find amore worthy explanation of the artistic process. The macro-historical events of academic note form only a minute fraction of our collective his- tory. Micro-history (the mundane occurrences of the everydayman) forms amuch larger percentage of our legacy. This is our true story. The gardener tending his plants, the parent playing with his child, the cook peeling a potato, all carry on their shoulders and manifest in their interactions the flame of our true essence. A lone individual must realize he plays a role in a larger panorama of a hu- man posture. In his moving through and interact- ing with life, he is carrying mankind forward and writing our history. Art, then, would be much better approached as a philosophical process of thought. It is an intellec- tual endeavor. Certainly, it is not about regurgitat- ing our surroundings through representations. It is a muchmore natural activity that we all partake in by merely experiencing life. The chemist who makes a scientific breakthrough and publishes a paper about it cannot be considered a “writer of pa- pers”: he is considered a scientific researcher who published a paper. Even though his text is the only part of his work which can be shared, his process is the important part of the product. In this same light, the final piece which the artist can present to the public is the culmination of an intellectual process. All his technical perfection will serve him to add an exclamation point to his conceptual un- dertaking and make the final aspect of his work more receivable, but he must remember that his task is to add to the aggregate of human intellect.
