Its construction dates back to the 11th century and has witnessed the history of the Balkans, from the heyday of the Byzantine Empire to the periods of Ottoman occupation. Its architecture combines design elements that reflect the Byzantine tradition, with a large dome and mosaics adorning its walls. Of particular note are the medieval Orthodox paintings in the interior, which depict various biblical scenes. It should be noted that during the Ottoman invasion, many churches and monasteries in the region were destroyed or converted into mosques. Hagia Sophia was no exception: its frescoes were covered with layers of paint and plaster, which allowed them to be preserved until they were rediscovered. Since 1980, Ohrid and its surroundings have been declared a World Heritage Site, and Hagia Sophia Chapel is one of the central jewels of this distinction as a bridge between eras where history, art and faith of that time converge.
