Creado como un auto de serie, el Bugatti Type 59 Sports se convirtió en uno de carreras, obteniendo múltiples victorias en Grandes Premios, a la par de tener vínculos con la realeza que se refleja en su estado actual, al conservar la decoración que se le dio cuando fue renovado antes de ser entregado al rey Leopoldo de Bélgica. Ettore Bugatti lo mandó pintar de negro –color favorito del monarca– y decorarlo con una franja amarilla que conmemoraba los colores de las competencias belgas.
