Tagore fue un internacionalista decidido, partida-
rio de romper las barreras nacionales y culturales que
separan a todos los seres humanos. Por ello, en 1901
fundó la escuela Santiniketan, a través de la cual co-
menzó a enseñar una mezcla de filosofías orientales
y occidentales, donde lo más importante era la defen-
sa de la libertad intelectual del ser humano. En 1921,
esta escuela se convertiría en la Universidad Interna-
cional Visva-Bharati.
Sus obras fueron muchas y variadas. Poesía, en-
sayo, novela, teatro, conferencias; además de incur-
sionar en la pintura, la pedagogía y la filosofía. Tagore
murió en 1941 sin lograr ver cumplido uno de sus sue-
ños más grandes: la independencia de la India.
Sin duda, Tagore fue uno de los pensadores más
influyentes del siglo XX. Muchas de sus opiniones so-
bre el nacionalismo, la educación y el diálogo entre las
diversas culturas, tienen aún validez intelectual más
allá de su tiempo.
Tagore was a internationalist, supporter of
breaking national and cultural barriers between
all human beings. Therefore in 1901 he founded
the Santiniketan School, where he began teach-
ing a mixture of Eastern and Western philoso-
phies, where the most important aspect was the
defense of intellectual freedom of all human be-
ings. In 1921 this school became the Internation-
al University Visva-Bharati.
His works were many and varied. Poetry, es-
says, novels, plays, lectures, in addition to dabble
in painting, pedagogy and philosophy. Tagore died
in 1941 without seeing fulfilled one of his greatest
dreams: the independence of India.
Undoubtedly, Tagore was one of the most influ-
ential thinkers of the twentieth century. Many of
his views on nationalism, education and dialogue
between different cultures have current intellec-
tual validity beyond his time.
