Alejandro Gómez Oropeza

Paradise, the new collection by the renowned Mexican painter, Alejandro Gomez Oropeza, which opens thus coming 28th of September at the Camino Real Hotel in Polanco, is a slice of peace, such as the artist describes it: “Paradise, my paradise, is a dreamlike interpretation of a nature that, through tones of light, leafs, shadows, planes, transparencies, and movements, fill one with positive energy, joy, and calmness.”

With the force and passion that characterize his strokes, the new collection marks the beginning of mature artistic phase, the handling of blue, green, and red colors an organic composition reflect life in movement, yet not in a chaotic manner, but in that sway which we see in reality, a discreet, fluid and sensual movement.

For the artists, a green color can posses seven unique hues, for he has learned to observe reality and take from it the elements necessary to construct a paradise. With this show, Gómez Oropeza celebrates 20 years as a plastic artist with a unique and define style.

The possibility of finding a peaceful space in the works of Gómez Oropeza makes us understand that the greatest pleasure and enjoyment is found in life… “One does not need to die to feel paradise, the paradise of life. Life is tangible, is present, we don´t know anything about the life after these one, it´s an enigma, an illusion and the greatest desire” says the artist.

After investing two years in this collection, a distortion of reality is displayed which allows for the formation of new forms, colors and figures; it is a compound of an utopian reality; of formations and essence.

Does a paradise exist without temptation?

This question generated moments of intense reflection for the artists, for: Is it entirely possible to enjoy a paradise without temptation, or is temptation part of the enjoyment of paradise?

In Oropeza’s works, temptation is a symbol, it is a part of language and of the understanding of reality; you cannot comprehend paradise without first understanding the nature of temptation. To arrive there, one has had to live through many an experience, discussions, frustrations and betrayals, correct or incorrect decisions, achievements and failures. It is only possible to enjoy paradise through life experiences.

In his works, once can see the influence of great universal masters of art, such as Picasso, Miró, and Kandinsky; Picasso in the deconstruction of reality, the influence other two in the geometric play, and the handling of color. Furthermore, the way that texture is handled in the making of the works, which brings us closer to Pollock, pave way for a new dimension,  one that can integrate different means and meanings to enrich this array of experiences that one holds on the journey to conquer all the desires.

As a plastic artist, Oropeza has always been highly preoccupied with art, and with the significance it has on our present time, including the definition of a work of art, taking as a response that art is merely that which produces an aesthetic experience, that which converses with the spectator and wich swells the soul.

In his works, there exists various phases where the principal element is the insinuated human figure, whether it be by a stroke or shadow, the figure is always present. Paradise offers the spectator the possibility to lose himself and enjoy, to distance himself from the world in order to approach pleasure and happiness.

This exposition is, without a doubt, a reflection of the maturity that can be found in the artistic creations of Alejandro Gomez Oropeza, making it impossible for one not to assist. In the words of the artist himself at the end of this collection: “Find, or seek your paradise, I give to you some of mine… I offer you Paradise”
