Acapulco was once again the stage for the 21st edition of the Mexican Open, where the crown went to the Slovak Dominika Cibulkova, a favorite for the title in the females single category, and the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, fourth favorite for the title.

In the female category, the Slovak Dominika Cibulkova, which came out victorious against Christina McHale 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 and headed to the finals, where she went up against the American Christina McHale, after defeating the French Caroline Garcia by 3-6, 6-2 and 7-5. Cibulkova defeated McHale with a final score of 7-6 (3), 4-6, and 6-4, earning the Slovak her first crown of the year, and giving herself a total of 280 points in the WTA scoreboard.

The surprise of the night belonged to Dimitrov, who eliminated Scottish Andy Murray, the second favorite, in three sets, with a final score of 4-6, 7-6 (7/6), and 7-6 (7/3). With this play, the final was settled: Dimitrov against the South African Kevin Anderson, fifth-seeded, who previously eliminated the Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, with a final score of 6-1, 5-7, and 6-4. Finally, the Bulgarian Dimitrov took the first spot of the ATP 500 category tournament, after facing a three-hour long match against the South African Anderson, ending 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, and 7-6 (7/5).

 

 

Innovations

This edition is a watershed moment for the white sport in Mexico, and will make a legend out the slogan: “New courts for a new era (nueva chanca, nueva era).” Given that, after two decades of showcasing the tournament in clay courts, today new hardcourts are unveiled. This is paired with Telcel and Grupo Pegaso innovating incorporation of “Hawkeye” technology, which allows for a full review of any given play.

The new hardcourts will open up the possibility of attracting even more top players from the ATP and the WTA for the upcoming tournaments. The Mexican Open, the most important tennis tournament in Latin American, continues to rise and for part of the renowned ATP “Hot Tour”: Acapulco, Indian Wells, and Miami.

 

Telcel committed to the sport

Once more, Telcel renewed its commitment to the sport in Mexico, facilitating communication between all parties by way of its Red Telcel 4GLTE, which broadened and improved Internet navigation. During the tournament, a stand was set up for visitors to become acquainted with the latest devices from Sony’s Z line, backed by 4GLTE connection.

Furthermore, the WWF – Telcel Alliance made available the Nature is calling us 3D application, which gathers biological information about animal species, little-known facts, and the alliance’s achievements. Through this application, visitors can visualize and interact with a Carey tortoise ((Eretmochelys imbricata) in 3D from their cellphones, and tablets.

Other innovating technologies features this year on the Mexican Open was, “ideas Deporte”, an application for the Android and Blackberry 10. This edition offered a special channel with up-to-date information about the tournament: the players, statistics, as well as a tournament schedule, videos, photographs, and promotions.
