Buenavista 2012 

The 2012 competitive fishing season began in July at Buenavista, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. From the 24th to the 28th, 61 vessels competed in the XIII Edition of “Bisbee’s Buenavista 2012” Fishing Tournament for a grand prize of 457 thousand 200 dollars. 

The Bisbee’s tournament is composed of three branches, the first being the “Buenavista Bisbee’s” (East Cape Offshore), undertaken in the tourist corridor know as East Cape, there the grand prize for the winner exceed the 300 thousand dollar mark, placing itself in the big leagues of fishing tournaments. Wayne Brisbee, Chairman of the tournament, was quoted as saying that with the support of the new Cabo Riviera marina, soon they would surpass the one million dollar mark in prizes. 

At the beginning of the competition, Clicerio Mercado, coordinator of the tournament, notified the three species to keep in mind: Blue and Black Marlin, with a minimum weight of 300 pounds; Dorado (30 pounds), and Tuna (40 pounds); he added that “Bisbee’s Black $ Blue 2012” fishing tournament would begin on the 23th of October of this year at the municipality of Cabo San Lucas.

In this occasion, the captured Marlin did not achieve the required weight, nevertheless, in the other categories there were unprecedented results: a total of 94 fishes were captured during the three days of the tournament to reach a total of 48 hooks; 30 Blue, and one Black, and 15 Sailfish were released back into the ocean alive, resulting in a liberation percentage of 96.8%.

In other categories, 15 Dorados and 3 Tuna were taken to the scale; one fish that made a difference was the Yellow Tail Tuna, coming in at 262 pounds, which established a new record in the “East Cape Offshore” tournament. The fish was captured by the Awesome vessel, which earned a prize of 37 thousand 95 dollars.

The Ez-Duz team managed to take to the scale a beautiful Dorado weighing in at 57.5 pound, which earned them a prize of 37 thousand 95 dollars; meanwhile, the Tenacious team received 22 thousand 950 dollars with the capture of a 213 pound Tuna; on the other hand, The Tiger Spirit crew picked up 11 thousand 475 dollars with the capture of a 40.1 pound Dorado, while the Hang ‘Em High vessel managed to hook a 42.4 Dorado on the second day, and won 11 thousand 475 dollars.

The Buenavista Bisbee’s 2013 tournament is set to take place between the 23rd and 27th of July, 2013. The next event in the series is the Baja 2012. “Los Cabos Offshore Charity Tournament” will take place between the 19th and 21st of October, and will be followed by the largest event of all: “Bisbee’s Black & Blue”, scheduled to take in place between the 23rd and 27th of October.

The Bisbee’s Tournaments have set up the most important fishing events in the world in Mexico for over 30 years, and it holds a Guinness World Record for competitive fishing with cash prizes set at 4 million 165 thousand 960 dollars in 2006.
