The Venetian show has changed venues several times, until it found the Arsenale - an ancient and historic 12th-century naval base - to become its permanent venue from 2019
The Arsenale di Venezia was the venue for the fourth edition of the Salone Nautico Venezia 2023, which welcomed more than 30,000 visitors and featured the most important Italian boatbuilders in an exhibition where sustainability was the central theme.
In addition to the exhibition of 300 boats, 240 of which were on the water, conferences on the same theme were held at the first Biennale of Sustainability, an event promoted and organized by the Venice Sustainability World Capital Foundation, which runs until November 25.
In total there were 220 exhibitors, 180 of which were local, including yacht builders Ferretti Group, Azimut Benetti, Solaris Yacht, Sanlorenzo Yachts, Pardo, Arcadia, Invictus, Absolute, Beneteau, Rizzardi, Loy Explorer, Green Line, Fountaine Pajot, Nautor Swan, Solaris Power, Prestige, Rio Yacht, Sense Yacht and FIM.
Italy's shipbuilding industry accounts for half of the world's yacht orders. According to data from the Italian Trade and Agency, in 2022 it will have a turnover of $7.5 billion and exports of $3.2 billion.
The best of the best
The flagship of the motor yachts on display was the Ocean King Ducale 120 superyacht, a 120-feet steel explorer built by the Venetian shipyard Ocean King.
Among the motorboats from foreign companies, the Turkish shipyard Sirena Yacht stood out with the Sirena 58; from England, Sunseeker came with four boats, including the Superhawk 55, capable of 38 knots, and the Manhattan; and from Greece, Omikron exhibited the Omikron OT-60.
The return of sailboats to the show was significant, with 30 boats ranging in size from 33 to 100 ft. The presence of shipyards in this sector doubled compared to the last edition. The flagship of the show was the Nautor Swan, the Swan 65 built by CNB and designed by Studio Brenta, as well as the 30-ft. Whimsea. Also present were Lagoon, Dufour, More, Jeaneau, Pegasus and Italia Yacht, while Elan, Bavaria, Neo Yacht, Felci, Kufner and Hallberg-Rassy participated for the first time.
Federico Gambini, president of Solaris Yachts, a company that made its debut at the show this year, said that the experience of previous editions led them to present two sailboats of 40 and 50 ft. and a 44-ft. motorboat.
This edition saw significant growth in the electric sector, with more than 50 electric boats on display, an increase of 30% over last year. This trend responds to the demand for increasingly advanced boats due to their environmental footprint and use of sustainable materials. Hydrogen-powered vessels were also on display, such as the French Sea Bubble catamaran and the Hydrocell project dedicated to this transformation.
