Marrakech is renowned for its golf courses located within the sweetness of the climate, inside La Palmeraie, that great field of date palms that has brought fame to Marrakech since its establishment. Far away, the Atlas Mountains and their snowy peaks dominate the scene and invite golfers to end their weekend skiing in the l’Oukaimeden station. The peacefulness of the golf courses allows one to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, which preserves its medieval ambiance, the noise of the Djemaa el Fna plaza and the very lively nights of the city.
The Royal Golf Club, created in 1923, is located only three kilometers (1.8 miles) from Marrakech and features 18 par-72 holes with a length of 6,276 meters (6,863 yards). It extends over an area of 45 hectares (111 acres) festooned with cypresses, eucalyptus, palms, olives and fruit trees. Frequented by famous people such as Churchill and Eisenhower, it was one of his Majesty Hassan II’s favorite golf courses. It offers wide fairways, which resemble authentic carpets, which wind their way between two lines of trees that motivate prudence. The greens are wide and undulating and are very protected by strategically placed bunkers along the whole course. The club offers a driving range, a Pro Shop and a cafeteria-bar.
The La Palmeraie Golf Palace was designed by R. Trent Jones, has 18 par-72 holes and is a true work of art. It has a length of 6,200 meters (6,789 yards) and spreads out over a magnificent terrain sprinkled with seven lakes and thousands of palms as well as the fabulous view of the Haut Atlas Mountains. The high-end Club House offers a complete variety of services, among them a Pro Shop and a cafeteria-bar.
The Golf d’Amelkis was designed by C. Robinson, features 18 par-72 holes and a length of 6,115 meters (6.687 yards) of rolling land. It has vast fairways that bring to mind an American golf course and holes of red dirt that are part of the beauty and originality of the course. On the other hand, it is considered the most technical golf course of Marrakech. Because of its length and the skill required, it is recommended for experienced players. This golf course, with its original architecture, was where the Morocco 2000 Open was held.
