However, Aegeus' times were not easy; Athens owed a terrible and bloody debt to Crete: every year the city had to send to the island of Crete seven virgin maidens and seven young Athenian girls to be devoured by the terrible Minotaur, a monstrous creature that lived in the labyrinth of the palace of Knossos. In the third year of this ignominious dispatch, the young and magnificent prince and hero, Theseus, handsome as the sun, volunteered to his father, the king, to be allowed to join the sacrifice of young men that accompanied the victims, so that he could face the fearsome beast himself. With all the regret in his heart, King Aegeus let his young and beloved son go, but not before assuring Theseus that not a day would pass without him waiting to see him again, and that every morning he would look out from the land over the wide sea to see in the distance the ships that would bring him triumphantly back to Athens.
