Before leaving, Aegeus made his son promise not to prolong his father's torment, and so father and son agreed on a system of signals with the ship's sails: if Theseus returned alive, he would hoist white sails as a sign of triumph; but if he failed and died, the ship would carry black sails. Theseus succeeded in defeating the monstrous Minotaur with the help of the beautiful Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, and began his return to Athens. In his excitement and carelessness, the young prince forgot to replace the black candles with white ones. The grieving Aegeus, waiting anxiously at Sunion Cape, saw in the distance the black sails approaching and, believing that his son was dead, mad with grief, threw himself into the sea in despair and took his own life. Since then, the sea that kisses the shores of Athens, where the griefstricken Aegean perished, has been known as the Aegean Sea. Certainly, the end of King Aegeus was tragic and dramatic, but it is also true that the king chose for his final resting place a beautiful blue sea of deep, luminous and radiant hues.
