Comenzó en San José
Los comienzos del golf en Los Cabos fueron los nueve hoyos
de San José Club de Golf, actualmente propiedad de Mayan
Palace, que lo adquirió en abril de 2004. Está ubicado en la tran-
quila población de San José del Cabo, donde Mario Schjetnan y
Joe Finger diseñaron un campo par 35 de 3,141 yardas.
Posteriormente Jack Nicklaus fue contratado para dise-
ñar Palmilla Golf Club, un escenario de 27 hoyos divididos en
tres recorridos –Mar, Arroyo y Montaña–que le dan al juego
otra dimensión.
Palmilla presenta en cada hoyo un desafío para los juga-
dores, con sus enormes cactus y profundos arroyos, junto a
impresionantes vistas del Mar de Cortés. El campo tiene cin-
co tees de salida escalonados, imponentes fairways, cuatro
lagos y desafiantes cambios de elevación que garantizan a
los golfistas un apasionante e inolvidable juego. Palmilla Golf
Club ha sido clasificado como uno de los 100 mejores del
mundo por una conocida revista de golf, incluido el hoyo 6,
un doble dogleg par 4 de 460 yardas.
En la realización de los 27 hoyos, Nicklaus, acompañado
por un séquito de colaboradores, les informaba de cómo y
dónde iban a ir cada uno de los greens, así como la zona de
aterrizaje de la bola. Hábilmente, un dibujante realizaba el
trazo y se lo mostraba. Eso incluía mover de lugar enormes
saguaros y cactus, así como abrir brecha. Meses después re-
gresó Nicklaus para supervisar la obra y posteriormente es-
tuvo nuevamente en Los Cabos para el recorrido inaugural,
que incluyó una “clase” de cómo jugar uno a uno los hoyos.
This began in San José
The early stages of golf in Los Cabos were nine holes
at San José Golf Club, nowadays owned by Mayan
Palace, acquired in April, 2004. It is located in the
quite small town San José del Cabo, where Mario
Schjetnan and Joe Finger designed a 35-hole par golf
course of 3.141 yards. Lately, Jack Nicklaus was hired
to designed the Palmilla Golf Club, a 27-hole setting,
divided in three courses –Sea, River and Mountain–
that give the game a different dimension.
Each hole in Palmilla represents a challenge for
players, with huge cactus and deep rivers, besides
the incredible view to the Sea of Cortez. The course
has five spaced tees, impressive fairways, four lakes,
and challenging elevations that guarantee a pas-
sionate and unforgettable game. Palmilla Golf Club
has been classified among the 100 best world golf
courses in a well known golf magazine, included the
6th hole, a double dogleg 4 par of 460 yards.
When designing the 27 holes, Nicklaus informed
his staff how and where the greens will be, as well as
the landing zone of the ball. Skilfully, a designer
made drafts and showed him. It was necessary then
to move out huge cactus and saguaros, and therefore
get enough space. Months later, Nicklaus came back
to supervise the work, and lately he returned back to
Los Cabos for the inauguration, that included a “les-
son” of how to play each of the holes.
