ace seis millones de años comenzó a
separarse lo que hoy es la península de
California, lo que dio origen a un mar in-
terior: El Mar de Cortés.
El Mar de Cortés o Golfo de California, se ubica
entre la península de Baja California y los estados de
Sonora y Sinaloa, al noroeste de México. Ocupa una
superficie marina aproximadamente de 283 mil km
2
.
Debido a las condiciones geográficas de la
región, así como a diversos fenómenos climáticos
característicos, este mar se destaca por ser uno de
los más productivos del planeta, ahí se genera una
gran cantidad de plancton -fitoplancton y zoo-
plancton-, base de la cadena alimenticia, que a su
vez permite el desarrollo de uno de los ecosistemas
más biodiversos del mundo.
El acuario del mundo
El legendario Capitán Cousteau bautizó al Mar de
Cortés como: “El acuario del mundo”, donde es posi-
ble encontrar hasta 800 especies de peces. Aquí los
grandes siguen a los pequeños; del plancton se ali-
mentan sardinas y anchovetas y de éstos jureles y
atunes, marlines azules, rayados y negros, peces
vela y espada, dorados y gallos.
Pero el mejor momento de la naturaleza lo ofrece
irónicamente la más amenazada de las especies de
peces en el mundo, los que han sido satanizados y
perseguidos injustificadamente, los diferentes tipos
de tiburones y mantas gigantes, quienes son el
deleite de los miles de buzos que vienen de diferen-
tes países a filmarlos y nadar con ellos.

The Sea of Cortes.
The Sea of Cortes or Gulf of California, is located
between the peninsula of Baja California and the sta-
tes of Sonora and Sinaloa, to thenortheast ofMexico.
It has a maritime surface of around 283, 000 km2.
Due to the Geographic conditions of this
region, as well as other characteristic weather phe-
nomena, this sea stands out for being one of the
most productive in the planet, a large quantity of
plankton is generated here –phytoplankton and
zooplankton-, base of the food chain, that at the
same time allows the development of one of the
most bio-diverse eco systems in the world.
The World’s Aquarium
The legendary Captain Cousteau named the
Sea of Cortes as: “The World’s Aquarium”, where
up to 800 different species can be found. In here
the big ones follow the little ones; sardines and
anchovies feed from the plankton, and then
tuna; blue striped and black marlins, dorados etc,
feed from the sardines.
But the best moment of nature is ironically
offered by the most threatened fish species in the
world, those who have been hunted and pursued
for no justified reason, the different kinds of
sharks and giant mantas, being the delight for all
the thousands of divers that come from all around
the world to film them and swim with them.
