the Whale shark, and in addition to this we can
tell you there’s a spectacular place, still hidden
today, where bull sharks gather every year to
reproduce themselves.
Without a doubt, one of the biggest secrets
offered by this sea is the great migrations every
year of huge groups of hundreds of giant squids,
locally called “Devils”, because of their aggressive
behavior, they travel all the way to this place being
transported by the Humboldt currents, the same
that gives names to these species.
They come here in themiddle of spring and leave
until the endof the summer. All of this is relatedwith
the water temperature and the nutrients that this
cold current brings every year to the Sea of Cortes.
Home of the Whales
This great ecosystemis the home for over 60%of
the whales species on the planet, this means than 8
out of 11 whale species that inhabit this planet are
born, raised, fed, reproduced and even visit these
rich waters: Blue Whales and Humpback Whale we
can also see some Orcas and Sperm Whales.
Remember Moby Dick?
Even though it inhabits the Sea of Cortes, the
Grey Whales is born outside of it, in the coast lago-
ons of Ojo de Liebre, Bahia de Magdalena and San
Ignacio, in the Occidental part of South Baja
California. This is one of the most amazing shows
that nature can offer.
This means that some of the whales that inha-
bit all the different seas in out planet are Mexicans
by birth. ¡Lets take care of our country whales!
el Tiburón Ballena y adicionalmente les comentamos
que existe un sitio espectacular, pero hoy todavía
secreto, en el que se agregan cada año para reprodu-
cirse decenas de tiburones toro.
Sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes secretos que
este mar ofrece es la gran migración que año con año
sucede de enormes grupos compuestos por cientos
de calamares gigantes, denominados localmente “dia-
blos”, por la agresividad que les caracteriza, estos via-
jan a este sitio transportados por la corriente de
Humboldt, misma que da nombre a esta especie.
Llegan aquí a mediados de primavera y se van al
final del verano. Todoelloestá relacionado con la tempe-
ratura de las aguas y la abundancia de nutrientes de esta
fría corriente que ingresa al Mar de Cortés anualmente.
Hogar de ballenas
Este gran ecosistema es el hogar del 60% de las
especies de cetáceos del planeta, es decir, que 8 de
las 11 especies de ballenas que habitan en el mundo
se alimentan, nacen, se reproducen ó visitan sus
ricas aguas: Ballena azul, ballena jorobada, también
podemos llegar a apreciar orcas y cachalotes ó balle-
na de esperma, ¿se acuerdan de Moby Dick?
Aunque habita en el Mar de Cortés, la ballena gris
nace fuera de éste, en las lagunas costeras de Ojo de
Liebre, Bahía de Magdalena y San Ignacio, en la parte
occidental de Baja California Sur. Esto representa
uno de los espectáculos más sorprendentes que
puede ofrecer la naturaleza.
