l jaguar o yaguar (
Phantera onca
), proviene del
vocablo guaraní que se le atribuyen dos signi-
ficados: “el que mata de un salto” o “cuerpo de
perro”. Es un mamífero carnívoro que pertenece a la
familia
Felidae,
siendo el felino de mayor tamaño que
encontramos en el continente Americano. Llega a
medir más de dos metros y medio de longitud, aun-
que el tamaño promedio oscila entre 1.80 metros de
largo más la cola, que puede medir 70 centímetros.
Su peso oscila entre 130 y 150 kilogramos y por lo
general los machos son más grandes que las hem-
bras. Tiene manchas negras por todo el cuerpo en
forma de anillo o rosetas y a diferencia del leopardo,
las rosetas en el jaguar encierran otra pequeña man-
cha y tienden a concentrarse a lo largo de la boca y
otras en la parte posterior de sus orejas. La hembra
siempre es más clara y presenta menos manchas
anulares en cuello y espalda. Es frecuente encontrar
melanismo (jaguares negros) y algunos casos de
albinismo.
Es un animal territorial y solitario, vive en pareja
sólo durante la época de celo que dura de cuatro a
cinco semanas, abandonando el macho a la hembra
antes del parto. Son capaces de criar en cualquier
época del año, el periodo de gestación dura alrededor
de 100 días y normalmente nacen de dos a cuatro
cachorros por parto.
Su lugar preferido es la selva tropical, especial-
mente cerca del agua, aunque se le puede encontrar
en casi todo tipo de lugares como en bosques, zonas
ribereñas, llanuras herbáceas, matorrales secos y

nates from the Guaraní vocabulary and has
twomeanings: “hewhokills inonepounce”
or “the body of a dog”. It is a carnivorousmammal
that belongs to the family of big cats found on
the American continent. It cangrow tomore than
two and half meters in length, although its ave-
rage length is approximately 1.80 meters in
length plus its tail, which can measure 70 centi-
meters. Itsweight varies between 130 and 150 kg
and in general, the males are larger than the
females. It has black ring or rosette-shaped
marks all over its body and unlike the leopard,
the rosettes encircle another small mark and
tend to concentrate along the mouth and behind
the ears. The female is always paler in color and
fewer marks on the neck and back. Black and
albino jaguars can frequently be found.
It is a territorial and solitaire animal, and
lives as a couple only during the breeding sea-
son that lasts four or five weeks, when the male
abandons the female after the birth of the cubs.
They can breed during any time of the year, the
gestation period last approximately 100 days
and normally 2 to 4 cubs are born in each litter.
Their preferred habitat is the tropical jun-
gle, especially close to water, although they can
be found in almost all types of habitat, from
forests, river banks, herbaceous plains, dry
brushwood areas, deserts and savannas from
