Proviene de una palabra maya ts’ono’ot o dzonot, que significa abismo, agujero en el suelo o caverna con agua. Para el mundo maya eran fuentes de vida que proporcionaban el líquido vital para su existencia. En otros casos y mucho más ligados a los sacerdotes, eran considerados como la entrada al inframundo y centro de comunicación con los dioses. Hacía muchos años que no visitaba el hermano estado de Yucatán y los cenotes que existen en el área, y cuando se presentó la oportunidad, tomé mis arreos de buceo y una vez más me lancé a la carretera con rumbo a la blanca ciudad de Mérida, en donde ya me esperaba mi maestro y amigo Fernando Rosado, hombre que conoce mejor que nadie los caminos para llegar a los cenotes más alejados y casi no descubiertos de la región. Existen varios tipos de cenotes, algunos son verticales y otros son horizontales. Y en ocasiones, presentan dos tipos de recorridos, uno es conocido como caverna, donde los buzos sin mucha experiencia pueden realizar sus primeros acercamientos a esta actividad, pues se aprecia la luz del sol y las salidas se encuentran fácilmente. El otro se considera cueva, endonde el buzo tiene que entrar con el equipo adecuado que consiste en doble tanque, doble regulador, linternas varias, casco y sobre todo haber tomado los cursos y estar capacitado para realizar inmersiones con un alto grado de dificultad.
