We rested a while in order to enjoy the excel-
lent cuisine in Dar Roumana, served in a beautiful
traditional house in Fes. We enjoyed the Harira Mo-
roccan soup with lentils and lamb and beef tajine
with prunes and almonds. To finish our day, we
visited the potters and discovered their wonderful
work that is typical of Fez pottery, famous for over
1000 years.
Fourth night
The next daywe left early toMeknes, the imperial city
about 65 km, surrounded by its wall that adorns the
hill. We discovered Bab Lakhmis and Bab Berdaïne,
two richly decorated monumental gates of the sev-
enteenth century, and went to visit the former royal
palaceDar ElMakhzenwhichwas thepalaceofMoulay
Idriss, founder of Meknes. We continued the visit of
BabMansour, the imposingandmagnificent door dec-
orated with zelig, built in 1732 by Moulay Ismael, and
consideredthe largest inMoroccoandNorthAfrica.We
visited the Nejjarine mosque dating from the tenth
century, theBouananiamadrassa founded inthe four-
teenth century, which boasts a beautiful courtyard
decorated with zelig, finely carved stucco and wood,
consisting of 26 classrooms and its prayer room.
Then we could admire the perfect plan of the
city of Moulay Idriss, the wonderful Roman mosa-
ics depicting gods and scenes of everyday life, the
triumphal arch of Caracalla, the forum, the basilica
and the temple of Jupiter.
We returned to the Riad Fes and dined that
night at Maison Blanche, the branch of the famous
Parisian restaurant of the Avenue Montaigne by
Jacques and Laurent Pourcel.
Descansamos un rato para disfrutar de la excelen-
te cocina de Dar Roumana, que se sirve en una hermo-
sa casa tradicional de Fes. Gozamos la sopa marroquí
Harira con lentejas y cordero y el tajine de res con ci-
ruelas pasas y almendras. Para terminar nuestro día,
fuimos a visitar a los alfareros y descubrir su maravi-
lloso trabajo que constituye la cerámica típica de Fes,
famosa desde hace más de 1000 años.
Cuarta noche
Al siguiente día, salimos temprano a Meknes (o Me-
quinez), la ciudad imperial a unos 65 km, rodeada por
su muralla que adorna la colina. Descubrimos Bab
Lakhmis y Bab Berdaïne, dos monumentales puertas
ricamente decoradas del siglo XVII, y entramos para
visitar el antiguo palacio real Dar El Makhzen que fue
el palacio de Moulay Idriss, fundador de Meknes. Se-
guimos con la visita de Bab Mansour, la imponente y
fastuosa puerta, construida en 1732 por Moulay Is-
mael y considerada como la más grande de Marruecos
y África del Norte. Visitamos la mezquita Néjjarine que
data del siglo X, la madraza Bouanania fundada en el
siglo XIV y que luce un hermoso patio con su decorado
de
zeliges
, estuco y madera finamente labrada, com-
puesta de 26 aulas y su sala de rezos.
Posteriormente pudimos admirar el plan perfecto
de la ciudad de Moulay Idriss, los maravillosos mosai-
cos romanos que representan los dioses y escenas
de la vida cotidiana, el arco de triunfo de Caracalla, el
foro, la basílica y el templo de Júpiter.
Regresamos al Riad Fes y cenamos esa noche en
Maison Blanche, la sucursal del famoso restaurante
parisino de la avenue Montaigne de Jacques y Lau-
rent Pourcel.
