ada coloca al ser humano en su justa dimen-
sión como la grandeza de la Geografía. En
todo el planeta la naturaleza ha generado
maravillas ante las que una persona no puede sino
sentirse sólo una pequeña parte de algo que supera
su comprensión.
A lo largo de Sudamérica la evolución geográfica
ha generado una masa colosal de roca que en su lado
occidental sólo es separada del Océano Pacífico por
una estrecha franja de tierra en la que pueblos ances-
trales eligieron fundar una ciudad que, a pesar de ser
hoy un centro cosmopolita, conserva la esencia de
sus orígenes: Santiago de Chile.
Para emprender el viaje nos embarcamos en un
Benetti Crystal 145, yate de manufactura italiana
equipado con todas las comodidades. Y para devorar
las carreteras contamos con la velocidad del Gran Tu-
rismo MC Stradale de Maserati.
En Santiago nos impactará esa ciudad con edi-
ficios que, aunque enormes, parecen pequeños jun-
to a la magnificencia de los Andes. Y al recorrer sus
calles descubriremos la arquitectura, sus aromas y
sabores; notaremos un ambiente tradicional que nos
resultará acogedor.
La misma naturaleza ha regalado a la región el cli-
ma ideal para el cultivo de la vid, generando una ac-
tividad vitivinícola que hoy goza de gran prestigio a
nivel mundial. Cerca de la ciudad está el Viñedo Chad-
wick, que tras varios tropiezos vuelve por sus glorias
para ofrecer al mundo vinos con un creciente recono-
cimiento internacional.
No lejos de Santiago, en Bolivia, atestiguaremos el
Carnaval de Oruro. Cada año esta festividad se realiza
durante tres días con expresiones culturales como dan-
za, música, desfiles, procesiones, folclore y artesanías.
Dejémonos llevar por las corrientes del Pacífico
para adentrarnos en el territorio andino y fascinarnos
con sus colores, sus sonidos y sus sabores

ful place as the grandeur and dimensions of
geography. Throughout this world, nature
has generated marvels that force the individual to
feel as only a miniscule part of something that de-
fies his imagination.
Throughout South America, the geographic evo-
lution has generated a colossal mass of rock that on
itswesternside is only separatedby the PacificOcean
by a wide stretch of land in which ancient townsfolk
chose to found a city which, in spite of being a cos-
mopolitan center today, conserves the essence of its
origins: Santiago de Chile.
To begin this trip, we boarded an Asimut 116, a
yacht of Italian origin, equipped with all possible
commodities. And to travel through thehighwayswe
relied upon the speed of the Gran Turismo MC Strad-
ale, byMaserati.
In Santiago we were astonished to find that the
buildings, although large, seem tiny compared to
the magnificence of the Andes. And while walking
through its streets we discovered its architecture,
aromas and flavors; we found a traditional ambience
that proved to be embracing.
Nature itself gave the regions an ideal climate
for the cultivation of grapes for wine, generating a
winemaking activity that today boasts international
renown. Near the city one finds the Chadwick Vine-
yard, which, after numerous blunders, comes back
to regain its glory and offer the world wines that are
generating international interest.

navalofOruro.Eachyear,thisfestivityunfoldsoverthe
course of three days with such cultural expressions as
dances,music, parades, folklore, andarts andcrafts.
Let us then be taken by the currents of the Pacific
to reach Andean territory and become enthralled
with its colors, sounds, and flavors… let us be sur-
prised by Santiago.
