The challenge We all come from the sea, but few of us return to it. The sea, so pretty and complex, so unpredictable and majestic, is now wounded in the deepest parts of its abyss. Most people are not conscious of the importance oceans have for life on earth. If they were to know that oceans absorb 3 million tons of carbon dioxide annually; that medication that saves lives comes from the ocean; that the ocean is a source of animal protein. The oceans are home to a countless number of species of all shapes and sizes, from microscopic plankton to the giant squid, the octopus, sharks, and whales. In fact, the complexity of life is greater in oceans than on land. Unfortunately, our irreplaceable oceans are in danger. The impact of overfishing, global warming, urbanization on coastlines, pollution, illegal trafficking of species, accumulation of toxic substances, neglect and lack of education to name a few, have put our powerful oceans at risk and with them, all forms of life within. Oceans can provide and have provided notable benefits, but sadly we have gone past the fear and respect we used to have for them, and we have taken them for granted and mistreated them in the last few decades. In fact, in many places, the harm has been so grave that it is now irreversible. Oceans may appear to be endless and its wildlife may appear to be so prolific that for many centuries its resources, in particular fishing, seemed infinite, and its ability to absorb waste, unending. Both of these beliefs however, have proven to be false. Today, the oceans, their flora, and their fauna, find themselves under great threat, like never before, due to the direct or indirect effects of mankind. Subsequently, I believe that spiritually, the protection of our oceans is the truest cause, the most emotional and fair one we will ever embark upon as the human race. If it were to not be so, future generations will have us to blame. What I seek to accomplishwithmy photographs is not just science, but to create awareness so that this marvellous world can live on. El mar, tan bonito, tan complejo, tan impredecible y majestuoso ahora está herido en lomás profundo de sus abismos. Lamayoría de las personas no están conscientes de la gran importancia que los mares tienen para la vida en la tierra. Si les dijera que tan solo absorben más de 3 millones de toneladas anuales de dióxido de carbono; que de él se extraen medicamentos que salvan vidas; que son una fuente muy importante de proteína animal. Constituyen un hábitat de infinidad de especies de toda clase y tamaño que van desde el microscópico plancton hasta los grandes calamares, pulpos, tiburones y descomunales ballenas. De hecho, la complejidad de la vida es mayor en el mar que en la tierra. Por desgracia, nuestros insustituibles océanos están en peligro. El impacto combinado de sobrepesca, el calentamiento global, la urbanización costera, la contaminación, el tráfico ilegal de especies, la acumulación de sustancias toxicas arrojadas, el descuido y la falta de cultura, por mencionar solo algunos, han puesto en riesgo a los poderosos océanos y con ellos las formas de vida vegetal y animal que en ellos viven. Los océanos pueden aportarnos grandes beneficios, desgraciadamentehemos pasado del miedo y respeto que les teníamos a menos preciarlos y maltratarlos, sobre todo en los últimos años. De hecho, en muchas zonas el daño ha sido tan grave que quizá sea irrevertible. Los océanos parecieran ser inacabables y su vida salvaje tan prolífera que durante muchos siglos sus recursos, en particular la pesca, pareció inagotable y su capacidad de absorber desechos, infinita. Ambas creencias, sin embargo, han probado ser falsas. Hoy, los océanos, con su flora y su fauna, se encuentran bajo grave amenaza como nunca en la historia a raíz de manera directa o indirecta del ser humano. Por todo lo antes mencionado, creo que, espiritualmente, la protección de los océanos es la causamás real, emocional y justa que jamás se emprendiera en la historia de la especie humana. Si no fuera así, las generaciones futuras nos reclamarán. Lo que he buscado conmis imágenes no es la ciencia como tal, si no hacer conciencia para que este maravilloso mundo siga su curso.
