Developed for the next generation of yachts up to 50 meters in length, "Point Break" by Rolls-Royce Power Systems represents an innovative approach to bridge design.
By combining digital technologies with a new architectural concept, it redefines the bridge—serving both as a highly efficient control center and as an integral part of the yacht’s living area. Point Break addresses a significant design challenge for yacht designers and shipyards: reclaiming valuable onboard space for owners and guests without compromising the captain’s working environment or the highest standards of safety and functionality.
For Christian Paolini, General Manager of Automation and Navigation Bridge Systems at Rolls-Royce Power Systems in Italy, the goal was to optimize onboard space without compromising safety or operational capability. “With Point Break, we have reimagined one of the most space-consuming operational areas on a yacht to meet the evolving expectations of our clients.
Point Break makes life easier for captains and crew, while reclaiming valuable space on board for its original purpose: the enjoyment of owners and guests. ‘It reflects our vision for the future of yacht bridge design,’ adds Paolini.
The result is a dual-purpose bridge concept: when the yacht is not underway, the bridge opens up into the lounge area, while remaining fully functional and instantly ready for use should the need arise.
At the heart of the concept is a new bridge architecture featuring a state-of-the-art human-machine interface (HMI), designed to make navigation more intuitive, efficient, and user-friendly. A striking vertical arrangement of displays optimizes space and enhances situational awareness, while an advanced head-up display projects key navigational information directly into the captain’s field of view.
Point Break was conceived as a dynamic, adaptable space. When the yacht is not underway, the screens retract, creating an open area that can be used for other purposes on board. This transforms one of the most valuable areas of the yacht into an integral part of the onboard experience. This approach allows designers and shipyards to rethink interior layouts and achieve greater flexibility without compromising operational capability.
The concept also anticipates the next generation of digital onboard solutions, incorporating future AI-based document management functions and ensuring full compatibility with mtu NautIQ Foresight—Rolls-Royce’s advanced platform for the predictive health management of engines and systems. Together, these technologies enhance operational visibility, simplify maintenance planning, and streamline the daily tasks of captains and crew.” The Rolls-Royce Group also includes Rolls-Royce Power Systems, based in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Operating under the mtu brand, the company provides innovative solutions in power and propulsion technology, including high-speed engines and systems for marine vessels, heavy land and rail vehicles, and military applications. Its portfolio ranges from advanced diesel and gas engines and battery solutions to integrated energy systems for safety-critical applications, continuous power supply, combined heat and power (CHP), and microgrids.
