Northeast of Ethiopia, an unusual source of light and heat can be found emerging fromthe earth’s core. It is a lave lake from the Erta Ale volcano, located on theinhabited region of the Afar depression. It is 613 high even though itsbase reaches a diameter of almost 30 km and at the top two craters can befound. One of them is an inactive well, but the other is one of the 4 lavalakes in the world.
