Two New Embraer Aircraft
“The Brazilian firm Embraer launches two new business jet models, the MSJ and the MLJ”
Faced with the growing demand of large companies for larger and more comfortable business jets, Embraer has launched two new models: the Embraer MSJ and the Embraer MLJ. The new offerings belong to the mid-size and mid-light categories, respectively, with capacities of between seven and 12 passengers and two crew members. They will be positioned in the company’s product range between the Phenom 300 (Light jet) and the Legacy 600 (super midsize).
The mid-size MSJ will have a range of 5,560 km and the mid-light MLJ, 4,260 km, with speeds of between Mach 0.8 and 0.78, depending on the model.
Both models will have a cabin height of 1.82 meters, sufficient for passengers to move around freely thanks to the flat floor that makes full use of interior space. The new models will offer the best space and soundproofing in their class, enabling passengers to talk and work comfortably during the flight; as well as the largest luggage capacity in the holds. The MSJ will offer a fully-equipped galey and the MLJ will boast a complete center for the preparation of refrigerated foods. Both models will have a large fully-fitted bathroom in the tail.
The interiors of both models will feature a stylized design developed in conjunction with BMW Group Designworks USA, which straight away guarantees the very latest in comfort and good taste in all the details.
“Both models are the most solid evidence of our commitment to launch different, innovative and distinctive jets for the business aviation market,” commented Frederico Fleury Curado, president and CEO of Embraer during the presentation. “Today we take another important step towards our long-term strategic vision of becoming the best player in the global executive jet market.”
“We are very pleased to launch this design, starting from scratch from the MSJ and the MLJ. We believe that these new jets will revolutionize the mid-size and mid-light categories by offering the best characteristics in each class, with a flat-floor cabin, premium comfort in a modern design, totally fly-by-wire technology, superior performance and low operating costs.”
The Sao Paolo-based firm estimates that the total research and development investment for these new models will be approximately US$$7.5 billion, which will be supported by risk partners, financial institutions and the company’s own capital.
The technology
After studying various proposals, Embraer finally selected the engine and avionics suppliers for the two jets. Honeywell will be responsible for the HTF7500E propulsion systems, which are environmentally-friendly and based on the HTF7000 platform, incorporating the latest in technology to achieve the performance requirements with improved fuel efficiency, easy maintenance, low operating costs and reduced noise and emissions.
The Embraer MSJ will be able to fly 5,600 km carrying four passengers at a speed of Mach 0.80 and NBAA IFR reserves. The Embraer MLJ will offer a range of 4,260 km with four passengers at Mach 0.78.
Rockwell Collins will provide state-of-the-art technology with its Pro Line Fusion avionics suite, offering a modern and integrated flight deck with a broad perception of the conditions and a highly intuitive user interface through four high-resolution 15.1 inch displays. The highly-advanced graphic capacity will offer high resolution for the improved synthetic viewing systems, as well as multi-scan climate radar.
More than 200 professionals committed to the design and engineering processes are participating in the development of these new aircraft. The preliminary wind tunnel tests have been completed and the digital models of the jets have been created using CATIA V5 software, as well as performing simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
