DeLorean—the manufacturer of the car that brought to life the character Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox in the Back to the Future film franchise—will participate in the Airspeeder International Series, the world's first electric flying car racing series, as a constructor for the US Airspeeder team.
The team will compete as the DeLorean Airspeeder Team and make its debut in the 2026–27 season, starting this November.
This move brings one of the most recognizable names in automotive history to the starting grid of a sport driven by electric propulsion, advanced flight control, and AI-powered safety systems. It also makes DeLorean the first US constructor in flying car racing, competing against national teams from around the globe in the series' inaugural international season.
DeLorean holds a unique place in automotive culture. For over four decades, the name has stood for bold design, independence, and an unwavering fascination with the future. For much of that time, the world has envisioned a DeLorean leaving the road behind.
Airspeeder was founded on an equally straightforward idea: that electric flying cars should be developed the same way automobiles were—through the pressure, scrutiny, and spectacle of racing.
"DeLorean has always been defined by the courage to reimagine transportation," says Cameron Wynne, Brand Director at DeLorean Motor Company. "For forty years, people have pictured a DeLorean in the sky. We decided it was time to stop imagining it."
What does it mean to be a constructor? In the Airspeeder International Series, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft compete in three dimensions along electronically defined courses, rather than on a conventional track. For its debut season, the team will compete using the Airspeeder Mk3C, with DeLorean spearheading its design identity.
The role of manufacturer expands from there. The DeLorean Airspeeder for the 2027–28 season will be designed in collaboration with student engineering teams from universities across the United States—including the University of California, UC Berkeley, and Georgia Tech—bringing American engineering and design talent to the development of a racing aircraft.
Through its collaboration with Airspeeder, DeLorean aims to be involved from the outset, driving not only flying vehicle technology but also the regulatory, safety, and compliance frameworks necessary for responsible adoption. "While widespread use is still a long way off, the opportunity is significant. By getting involved early, DeLorean positions itself to help turn the mobility of the future from a vision into a practical, scalable reality," stated Wynne.
For DeLorean, the Airspeeder International Series serves as a real-world proving ground as electric flight transitions from prototype to product, playing out before a global audience interested as much in technology, design, gaming, and culture as in lap times. This positions the brand at the forefront of advanced air mobility and gives a new generation of fans a reason to connect with the name.
