Tiffany & Co. announces a historic partnership with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs dedicated to preserving the creative legacy of Jean Schlumberger.
Through an initiative led by the Tiffany Archives, both institutions will work on the conservation and digitization of approximately 5,000 original drawings and 5,000 documents, with the goal of preserving this extraordinary collection for future generations of researchers, curators, and designers.
To mark the beginning of this conservation project, Tiffany & Co. presents I Am Only a Pencil during Paris Fashion Week 2026. The presentation offers an exceptional opportunity to delve into Schlumberger's creative universe through original drawings, archival materials, and the extraordinary jewelry they inspired. For this occasion, the House also collaborated with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which contributed its scientific expertise to the project.
The French designer's arrival at Tiffany & Co. in 1956 marked the beginning of a new era of creativity for both the House and the world of jewelry. Inspired by nature, Schlumberger reinterpreted birds, flowers, sea creatures, and fantastical forms with an unmistakable sense of movement, color, and ingenuity.
The presentation begins with an introduction to Schlumberger's original drawings and continues with a selection of archival documents and photographs that offer a glimpse into both his creative process and aspects of his personal life. Guests then discover some of his most iconic jewelry creations, displayed alongside the drawings that inspired them, revealing the dialogue between imagination, design, and craftsmanship. Among the pieces presented are the Hedges and Flowers necklaces, and the Jasmine and Tulips necklaces.
The subsequent galleries explore Schlumberger's creations inspired by Surrealism and the influence of Haute Couture on his work, culminating in a selection of drawings and pieces dedicated to Bird on a Rock, one of the House's most iconic and enduring designs. Among the highlights is one of the earliest Bird on a Rock brooches, belonging to Bunny Mellon, in which the emblematic bird is perched on a lapis lazuli stone.
