The exhibition Speculation by Beijing-based artist Liu Wei is on view at the facade of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York.

This exhibition—the third commission resulting from the multi-year partnership between Genesis and The Met—will remain on the museum’s Fifth Avenue facade until June 8, 2027.

Launched in 2024, The Genesis Facade Commission is an annual exhibition inviting artists to create new sculptural works for The Met’s Fifth Avenue facade, in harmony with the museum’s Beaux-Arts architecture and encyclopedic collection. Following presentations by contemporary artists Lee Bul and Jeffrey Gibson, this year’s commission features four large-scale works by Beijing-based artist Liu Wei.

Over the past few decades, Liu has held solo exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, and Cleveland. The Genesis Facade Commission marks his first major museum exhibition in the United States.

Since the late 1990s, Liu has explored the realities of the contemporary era through diverse media, including photography, painting, video, sculpture, and installation. As one of the pioneering Chinese artists who sought to define conceptual art on their own terms amidst rapid social transformation, Liu has continuously evolved his artistic practice by challenging and reinterpreting historical expressions of abstraction, figuration, and the "readymade."

Known for his engagement with site and scale, Liu reconfigures fragments of the urban environment, historical sources, and bodily forms into grand sculptural installations and monumental shapes, while capturing and critiquing recurring conflicts and contradictions to challenge conventional boundaries.

For The Genesis Facade Commission, Liu Wei presents four sculptures of varying scales, each titled after a fundamental constant of physics: Speculation / Λ ; Speculation / G; Speculation / c; and Speculation / h. Composed of architectural fragments and bodily forms rendered in diverse materials—including composite fiberglass, steel, aluminum alloy, polyurethane paint, and raw bovine hide—the works take shape within the façade’s niches as "a jumble of still-life objects abruptly joined together."

The human hand emerges as a recurring motif and a defining form throughout the work, underscoring its enduring artistic, cultural, and symbolic resonance across time and space. It serves as a bridge between the tangible and the speculative, embodying Liu’s broader exploration of transformation, perception, and imagination.

"Speculation" explores fragmentation, transformation, and renewal, reflecting on the cycles of rupture and mending that shape individuals, cities, and societies over time.

Drawing on the artist’s experience of the profound transformations in rapidly modernizing China, the works examine the tensions, uncertainties, and contradictions accompanying such deep-seated change. Engaging in a dialogue with the Met’s Beaux-Arts architecture, the works reimagine the Fifth Avenue façade as a space for dialogue, reflection, and discovery.
