Located within Zambia’s largest national park—and following three years of preparation—the Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River has opened its doors.

This intimate, 13-room camp embodies African modernism through clean lines, handcrafted materials, and a design inspired by the surrounding landscape, creating a secluded sanctuary on the banks of the Kafue River.

Travelers are rewarded with complete privacy and a slower pace of life along one of the country’s most significant rivers. As the only lodge in Zambia elevated 3.5 meters above the ground, the Anantara Kafue sits on rosewood platforms designed to protect vital wildlife corridors. It offers private access to the river, providing uninterrupted views of a lush natural environment where hippos, elephants, large predators, antelopes, and over 500 species of birds thrive.

Africa’s Great Restoration Story

Kafue National Park—one of Africa’s least-explored natural landscapes—is entering a new phase of renewal, thanks to a partnership between African Parks and the Government of Zambia. Since 2022, efforts to strengthen security, rebuild infrastructure, and improve fire management have laid the groundwork for the return of wildlife across the park’s 22,480 square kilometers.

These initiatives have led to significant restoration milestones, ranging from the reintroduction of the Kafue lechwe antelope in 2024 to the largest wildlife translocation in Zambia’s history in 2025, which brought wildebeest and zebras back to these vast, tranquil grasslands. Experienced Zambian guides lead twice-daily vehicle safaris in Kafue National Park, tracking predators, elephants, and antelopes across the floodplains. Meanwhile, tranquil river safaris, bush picnics, and catch-and-release fishing offer a different perspective—far from the crowds typically found on safari.

A New Vision for Luxury Safari Design

Designed by Meg Ralph Spaces—a project recognized with the prestigious LIV Hospitality Design Awards—the camp embraces a contemporary, sustainable ethos. It operates on solar power, features on-site water purification, and minimizes the use of single-use plastics.

The structures are built around large riverine trees, such as marulas and jackalberries. The spacious suites, which offer panoramic views and a serene interior, are crafted from natural materials and feature organic curves and a palette of olive green, terracotta, and cobalt blue—all inspired by the surrounding landscape.

The Accommodations

The three "Horizon Terrace" suites (110 m²) are suspended 14.3 meters above the ground and are accessed via a glass elevator that blends seamlessly into the landscape.

Nine "Pool and Bush" villas (115 m²) are elevated 3.5 meters above the ground on wooden platforms; each serves as a grand, tent-style sanctuary immersed in the natural surroundings. These villas feature heated pools overlooking the river, while an indoor massage room—offering panoramic river views—serves as the centerpiece of the villa’s wellness concept.

The Presidential Villa (400 m²) is designed for both entertaining and relaxation by the pool. Situated 3.5 meters above the river, it includes a private indoor massage area, exclusive boat access, and a spacious terrace shaded by mature trees.
