with intense blue waters, which changed little by little
to a very clear blue color that contrasted with exuber-
ant vegetation. With the excitement, although control-
ling our desires to discover the marine depths, we
landed at Koror Airport, the capital of Palau, where
we were greeted by our guides.
During the long flight, I read about a place where we
were headed and I was surprised to learn that the ori-
gin of Palau continues to be a mystery. Apparently the
inhabitants are distant relatives of the Malayan people
of Indonesia, the Melenesian people from New Guinea
and the Polynesians. It has been confirmed that one of
the islands was inhabited up to several thousand years
before Christ.
What we do know for sure is what happened in
1783, when Captain Henry Wilson landed on its costs.
From that date, Palau has depended on various coun-
tries, which have struggled to gain control over it. But
it wasn’t until 1980 when its inhabitants achieved,
with their vote, their own Constitution and on January
1, 1989, it was constituted as the Independent Republic
of Palau. Even more so, the Republic is an archipelago.
It is located to the east of the Philippines and to the

rrizamos en el aeropuerto de Koror, la capital de Palao,
donde fuimos recibidos por nuestros guías.
En las largas horas que duró el vuelo leí sobre el lugar
al que me dirigía, y me sorprendí al enterarme de que el
origen de Palao sigue siendo un misterio, aparentemente
sus pobladores son parientes lejanos de los malayos de
Indonesia, de los melanesios de Nueva Guinea y de los
polinesios. Aunque se ha confirmado que una de sus islas
estaba habitada hace unos mil años antes de Cristo.
Lo que sí sabemos con certeza fue lo que sucedió en
1783, cuando el capitán HenryWilson encalló en sus costas.
De esa fecha en adelante Palao ha pasado a depender de
diversos países, que han luchado por obtener su control.
Pero no fue sino hasta 1980 cuando sus habitantes logra-
ron, con su voto, tener una constitución propia, y el 1 de
enero de 1989 se constituyó como República Independiente
de Palao. Aunque más que una República es un archipiélago.
Está ubicado al este de Filipinas y al norte de Papúa Nueva
Guinea, se compone por más de 300 islas, de las cuales sólo
nueve están habitadas.
