What was the biggest challenge

in designing the movement?

Ashortage of space. Themovement of the ZEITWERK

MINUTE REPEATER has more than twice the number

of parts than the already highly complex calibre

L043.1. Nonetheless, it has the same diameter as

the ZEITWERK STRIKING TIME, which requires about

250 fewer parts. To accommodate the ensemble in

such a tight space, we eliminated – among other

things – a separate spring barrel for the striking

mechanism and the conventional slide. The ZEIT-

WERK features one large, high-torque spring barrel

that is eminently suitable for this purpose.

What else was critical in the de-

velopment phase?

When designing such a complicated movement,

many details come into the equation. The ham-

mers, for instance, play a pivotal role. They must

retract instantly after the strike – just like drum-

sticks – to prevent any attenuation of the vibrat-

ing gongs. Their shape and weight are key issues,

as are the characteristics of the springs that set

the hammers in motion. The movements are so

fast that they can hardly be captured, even with

high-speed cameras.

How significant is the ZEIT-

WERK MINUTE REPEATER for A.

Lange & Söhne?

From my perspective as a product developer, the

ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER represents a mile-

stone for the future of A. Lange & Söhne. It has

brought us a great step forward in the de-

velopmentofchimingwatches.Fur-

thermore, the project was real-

ly fun, especially because of

the unusual challenges it

posed. Not least, this is

due to thewaywe col-

laborate as a team.

We confront each

other as sparring

partners,

which

allows us to iden-

tify new and cre-

ative solutions.

In this particular

case, a little bit

of pride on our

part is justified,

I think.

¿Cuál fue el reto más grande en el

diseño de este movimiento?

El poco espacio. El movimiento del ZEITWERK MIN-

UTE REPEATER tiene dos veces más el número de

partes que el ya altamente complicado calibre

L043.1. Sin embargo, tiene el mismo diámetro que

el ZEITWERK STRIKE, el cual requiere cerca de 250

menos partes. Para acomodar el ensamble en un

lugar tan pequeño, eliminamos -entre otras cosas-

un barrilete separado para el mecanismo y el desli-

zante convencional. ZEITWERK figura un barrilete

de toque largo que es eminentemente perfecto

para este propósito.

¿Qué otra cosa fue crítica en el

desarrollo de esta fase?

Cuando se diseña un mecanismo tan complicado,

muchos detalles entran en la ecuación. Los martillos,

por ejemplo, tienen un papel de suma importancia.

Deben de buscar retirarse inmediatamente después

del golpe –igual que las baquetas-, para prevenir cu-

alquier atenuación de los vibrantes gongs. Su forma

y peso son clave, también los resortes característicos

del set de martillos en moción. Los movimientos son

tan caídos, que difícilmente pueden ser capturados,

incluso con cámaras de alta resolución.

WERK MINUTE REPEATER para A.

Lange & Söhne?

Desdemi perspectiva como desarrollador de producto, el

ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER representa un hito dentro

del futuro de A. Lange & Söhne. Nos

ha traído un pasomás cerca a la direc-

ción en el desarrollo de relojes de re-

pique. Lo que es más, este proyecto

fue realmente divertido, especial-

mente por los inusuales retos

que este proyecto propuso.

Sin embargo, la forma en

la que trabajamos como

equipo es sumamente

gratificante. Nos con-

frontamos como pare-

jas de combate, lo cual

nos permite identificar

soluciones nuevas y

creativas. En este caso

en particular, un poco

de orgullo por nuestra

parte es sumamente jus-

tificable, creo.
