ing beauty and tranquility, this new world opens up
to those who dare to break the water’s surface with
their air tanks, regulators, flippers and face masks. It
is here where the real underwater adventure begins,
because submerging into the warmer and transpar-
ent waters of tropical seas is like having an encounter
with their inhabitants in their natural environment,
which produces great satisfaction.
Seeing, photographing, studying or simply let-
ting ourselves be carried by the currents of this
underwater world, where we can move in three
dimensions, listen to the sounds of silence or sim-
ply float without feeling the weight of our bodies
are the reasons why I have never been able to stray
far away from the sea.
The beginnings of modern diving were not easy;
however, human beings, with a conquering eye on
deep waters, discovered, often at the cost of their
own lives, the laws of decompression.
Now I, alongwithmany other thousands of ama-
teurs of this wonderful sport known as diving, am
able to submerge more safety and comfortably
thanks to all those who risked their lives before me.
Even though I know the ocean, its physics, its
chemistry and its dynamics, I never stop asking
myself how it is that primeval single-cell plankton
formed through the hydrogen and oxygen atoms,
which, according tomany scientists, gave rise to the
origin of life of Earth.
The ocean is so complex that many years ago, I
stopped asking myself so many questions and now I
dive purely for the pleasure of being and living.

marino, encontrándonos con un mundo totalmente
nuevo. De infinita hermosura y tranquilidad, se abre
ante los ojos de quienes equipados con un tanque de
aire comprimido, regulador, aletas y visor se atreven a
romper el espejo de agua. Y aquí es donde realmente
inicia la aventura submarina, pues sumergirse en las
cálidas y transparentes aguas de los mares tropicales
es como tener el reencuentro con sus habitantes en un
medio natural, y produce gran satisfacción.
Ver, fotografiar, estudiar o simplemente dejarnos
llevar por las corrientes en ese mundo submarino,
donde nos podemos mover en tres dimensiones, escu-
char los sonidos del silencio o simplemente flotar sin
sentir el peso de nuestros cuerpos son otros motivos
por los cuales no he podido alejarme de los mares.
Los inicios del buceo en la época moderna no fue-
ron fáciles, pero el ser humano, en su lenta conquista
de las aguas profundas, descubrió, a menudo a costa
de su propia vida, las leyes de la descompresión.
Ahora yo, como muchos otros miles de aficionados
al maravilloso deporte llamado “buceo”, me sumerjo
con más seguridad y comodidad, gracias a todos ellos
que arriesgaron sus vidas.
Por más que conozco el océano, de su física, su quí-
mica y su dinámica, nunca dejo de preguntarme cómo
es que a través de los átomos de hidrógeno y oxígeno
se formó el plancton unicelular primigenio, que fue,
según algunos científicos, lo que dio paso al origen de
la vida en la Tierra.
El océano es tan complejo que ya desde hace algunos
años dejé de hacerme tantas preguntas y ahora sólo me
sumerjo en él por el placer de ser y de estar.
