around the world. In this last category the world
champion of this specialty competed, Sean Farley
Gomez, who is a Manzanillo, Colima native.
It’s important to know that this internationally
renowned event has the same importance of inter-
national races such as the Rolex Cup, Key West Race
Week and MUMM Cup.
During the first day of Oceanica Class compe-
tition, while the crews set their vessels and less
than eleven minutes away from the begging of the
competition, we were informed that on board of the
regata´
s committee ship was the president of Mexi-
co, Felipe Calderon, along with the Secretary of the
Navy, who by their radio frequency inwhichwe were
waiting for the competition countdown welcomed
all the competitors in english as well as in spanish
thanking and cheering the participants of the race.
Fifteen minutes after the regata had started,
the Quintessence vessel leaded by Eduardo Saenz
accompanied by his family and friends had an ac-
cident due to the broken ship’s mast with no seri-
ous consequences for anyone in the crew. This left
him out of the competition. The other competitors
enjoyed the wind of 14 and 16 knots for which the
competition was unbeatable.
Es importante destacar que este evento, de talla
internacional, se ha puesto ya a la par de competencias
internacionales como la Rolex Cup, Key West Race Week,
así como la MUMM Cup.
Durante el primer día de competencias de la clase
oceánica, mientras los equipos y tripulaciones ajustaban
sus embarcaciones, nos enteramos que a bordo del barco
del comité de regatas y a menos de 11 minutos de la sali-
da se encontraba el Presidente deMéxico, Felipe Calderón
Hinojosa, acompañado por el Secretario de Marina, quien
por el canal del radio en el cual nos encontrábamos espe-
rando el conteo para la salida, dio la bienvenida a los par-
ticipantes, en inglés y español, dando palabras de apoyo
y agradeciendo la asistencia de los mismos.
A los 15 minutos de haber comenzado la regata, la
embarcación Quintessence, capitaneada por Eduardo
Saenz, y acompañado de su familia y amigos, sufrió la
“desarboladura” de su jarcia (se le rompió el mástil del
velero) sin consecuencias graves para ninguno de sus
tripulantes. Esto lo dejó fuera de la copa. Los demás par-
ticipantes disfrutaron de un viento de entre 14 y 16 nu-
dos por lo que la competencia estuvo inmejorable.
Otro evento relevante fue la llegada de Tania Elías
Calles a la marina, después de batir el récord Guinness
al cruzar en solitario y a bordo de una embarcación tipo
