Los tiburones blancos difieren bastante de ser
simples “máquinas de matar”. Para poder captu-
rar a los grandes mamíferos que constituye la base
de su dieta, los tiburones blancos practican una
característica emboscada: se sitúan a varios me-
tros bajo la presa, que nada en la superficie y cuando
llega el momento de atacar, avanzan rápidamente
hacia arriba con potentes movimientos de la cola y
abren las mandíbulas. El impacto suele llegar en el
vientre, donde el tiburón aferra fuertemente a la
víctima. Regularmente la presa queda moribunda,
y el tiburón volverá a alimentarse de ella, una vez
que ésta haya muerto, logrando con esto no salir
lastimado de un posible contraataque de la presa.
Algunas veces los tiburones blancos arremeten con
tanta fuerza a las focas y leones marinos, que se
elevanunpardemetrossobreelniveldelagua,con su
presa entre las mandíbulas.
Esta especie también consume carroña, espe-
cialmente la que procede de cadáveres de ballena a
la deriva. Cerca de las costas, los tiburones blancos
consumen grandes cantidades de objetos flotantes
por error: en sus estómagos se ha llegado a encon-
trar incluso matrículas de automóvil.
The greatwhit sharks aremore than just “killing
machines”. To be able to capture the greatmammals
that are part of the shark’s diet, the great whites
are involved in a very characteristic ambush: they
position themselves several meters below the
prey, swimming in the surface and when the time
to attack comes, they swim very fast with power-
ful strokes from the tail and open their jaws. The
impact usually happens on the tummy, where the
shark holds on tight to the victim. Usually the prey
ends up half dead, and the sharkwill come back and
feed on it again, once it is completely dead, this way
the shark avoids a possible counterattack from the
prey and getting hurt. Sometimes the great white
sharks charge so hard upon seals and sea lions that
they go up in the air a couple of meters with their
prey between their jaws.
This species also eats carrion, especially from
whale corpses. Near the coast the great white
sharks eat a lot of floating objects by mistake; very
rare objects have been found in their stomachs,
even license plates.
