Amura on Punta del este
C
uando llegamos a este destino en velero desde
Buenos Aires, después de una travesía sin proble-
ma y vientos favorables, en el horizonte surge
como un espejismo Punta del Este. Ésta es la playa más
exclusiva, la perla del Cono Sur, invadida por los famo-
sos cuando empieza el verano austral.
Los turistas llegan con los primeros días cálidos del
último mes del año, y los pertenecientes al jet set brasi-
leño o argentino buscan dejarse ver en las playas de du-
nas largas o de compras por calles elegantes. Desde que
pisan tierras uruguayas comienzan el juego de la rivali-
dad, compitiendo por quién tiene las mejores prendas,
los más sofisticados coches o las joyas que brillan a la
luz de las noches de altas temperaturas y animadas
conversaciones.
La calle Gorlero, vestida de neón y sofisticadas vi-
trinas, vive al ritmo de las bellas mujeres que en ella
deambulan para lucir sus espectaculares cuerpos bron-
ceados, y los hombres relucen sus Porsche o BMW.
Cenábamos en los restaurantes de la Rambla Arti-
gas, compartiendo la vida nocturna de la muchedumbre
estival y como representantes de la revista
Amura
nos
invitaban a las fiestas privadas que animan las elegan-
tes mansiones a la orilla del mar o que están escondidas
entre los pinos.
Los casinos, como el Conrad, estallan festivos reci-
biendo a gran cantidad de gente, pero nosotros prefe-
ríamos ir por las tardes a tomar té en Las Cumbres, un
maravilloso y exclusivo hotel restaurante. Está ubicado

Punta del Este appeared, like a mirage, on
the horizon. This is the pearl of the Southern Cone, its
most exclusive beach, and it is invaded by the rich and
famous when the austral summer begins.
Tourists arrive during the first warm days of the
last month of the year, and members of the Brazilian
or Argentinean jet set want to be seen on the beaches,
set along long stretches of dunes, or shopping on the
elegant streets. From the moment they touch
Uruguayan soil they begin a contest, a game in which
they compete for who has the finest clothes, drives the
finest cars or wears jewelry that shines in the light of
hot nights and lively conversations.
Gorlero Street, dressed in neon and sophisticated
window displays, lives to the rhythm of the beautiful
women who stroll there, flaunting their spectacular
bronzed bodies, while the men show off their
Porsches and BMWs.
We dined in the restaurants on Rambla Artigas,
sharing the nightlife with the summer crowd. Since
we were on assignment for
Amura
, we were invited to
the private parties at the elegant mansions that are
located on the sea or hidden among the pines.
The casinos, like the Conrad, are very festive and
attract huge crowds, but we preferred taking afternoon
tea in Las Cumbres, a marvelous, exclusive hotel and
restaurant. It is located at the top of Cerro de la Ballena,
Punta del Este es la
estrella de la Riviera
uruguaya, que palpita
con los ecos de las
fiestas o de los
escándalos que llenan
las páginas de las
revistas de chismes.
Sin embargo, es un
maravilloso espacio
en esa costa que
ha sabido combinar
su lado “People”
con una espectacular
naturaleza.
