6. Acercamiento a

dos maravillosos

tiburones martillo

(Sphyrnidae).

sharks

(Sphyrnidae).

En ese momento enciendo nuevamente la cámara

de video, acerco y fijo mi ojo a la lente, sin volver a

regresar la mirada hacia la pared y al grupo de buzos

con quienes venía, pensando que todos ellos estaban

viendo lo mismo que yo. Mi corazón empezó a palpitar

con mayor intensidad al irme acercando más y más a

estas manchas que venían como en una pared parale-

la a mí. Pude al poco tiempo darme cuenta que tenía

ante mí una de las oportunidades que muchos buzos

queremos experimentar en la vida: nadar entre una

escuela de tiburones martillo. Ante el asombro, no lo

podía creer, y sentimientos encontrados recorrieron

mi ser; por un lado, la excitación de tan majestuoso

acontecimiento y, por el otro, no puedo negar tam-

bién que hubo un tinte de temor de estar perdido en el

azul, enmedio de aproximadamente 50 o 60 tiburones

que pude después contar en el video. En esos momen-

tos pierde uno conciencia de su alrededor y no podía

pensar en otra cosa sino en tratar de sacar las mejores

imágenes del acontecimiento. Nunca antes había vis-

to tantos tiburones juntos. Ver a esta especie Sphye-

nidae tan particular es algo impresionante, ya que su

forma los hace muy especiales y distintos al resto. Se

cree que lo peculiar de su cabeza se debe a la mejora

en su visión periférica, que le permite ver casi los 360

grados en el sentido vertical y los hace más estables.

A pesar de que pueden aparecer en solitario muchas

veces, tienen grandes congregaciones y ahí estaba yo

intentando meterme en el medio de una de ellas.

As I turned on the video camera again, I fixed

my eye to the lens, not turning the gaze back to

the wall or the group of divers, I thought we were

all seeing the same thing. My heart began to beat

strongly as we began to get closer and closer to

these spots coming to a wall parallel to me. I soon

realized that I had before me one of the opportu-

nities that many divers want to experience in life:

I was swimming with a school of hammerhead

sharks. For general amazement, I couldn’t believe

it, many feelings crossed my being. I felt the ex-

citement of such a majestic event and, on the oth-

er hand, I cannot deny that there was also a tinge

of fear of being lost in the blue, in average, about

50 or 60 sharks could be count seen. At such times

one loses consciousness of its surroundings and

cannot think of anything else but to try to take

the best pictures of the event. I had never seen so

many sharks together. Sphyenidae is very unique

and impressive; their shape makes them very

special and different from the rest. It is believed

that the uniqueness of his head is due to the im-

provement in their peripheral vision, which al-

lows them to see almost 360 degrees in a vertical

position, at the same time it gives them stability.

Although it may appear hammer head sharks like

to often be alone, they usually are in large congre-

gations. There I was, trying to get into the middle

of one of them.
