IATAIA, travesía de México a Australia
IATAIA, Crossing fromMexico to Australia
T
o embark on a trip by sea is easily said, but
it is a task that entails a lot of work. Such is
the case of the Mexican boat IATAIA,
which’s crew was planning for over a year a
crossing that would take them leaving from
Acapulco to Australia.
The crossing began the 18th of April of 2007,
leaving headed to the islands of the south pacific
to end with the arrival to Coffs Harbour,
Australia precisely six months later, the 18th of
October, covering a total of 10 thousand nautical
miles, or around 18 thousand kilometers.
In this adventure, the crew members of the
IATAIA covered a total of 200 nautical miles per
day as a maximum, with maximum wind speed
up to 48 knots (approximately 85 kilometers per
hour), and during the trip themaximumspeed of
the boat was of 17 knots and the minimum even
of 0 knots, situation that was often presented.
According with Marcos Rodriguez, responsible
for the boat and for this project, the 95 per cent of
the trip was made by sail vela and the 5 per cent
restingwas with the help of amotor and due to the
strong currents el IATAIA a grounded once, for
which they required assistance and at the same
time itwasveryuseful tomeet amazingpeopleand
places.
E
mprender un recorrido por el mar se dice fácil,
pero es una empresa que conlleva mucho tra-
bajo. Tal es el caso de la embarcación mexicana
IATAIA, cuya tripulación durante más de un año estu-
vo preparando una travesía que los llevaría partiendo
desde Acapulco hasta Australia.
La travesía inicio el 18 de abril de 2007, partien-
do con rumbo a las islas del pacífico sur para finalizar
con la llegada a Coffs Harbour, Australia justamente
seis meses después, el 18 de octubre, recorriendo
un total de 10 mil millas náuticas, o alrededor de
18 mil kilómetros.
En esta aventura, los tripulantes del IATAIA reco-
rrieron como máximo por día un total de 200 millas
náuticas, con velocidades máximas de viento de
hasta 48 nudos (aproximadamente 85 kilómetros
por hora), y durante la travesía la máxima velocidad
de la embarcación fue de 17 nudos y la mínima
incluso de 0 nudos, situación que se presento
frecuentemente.
De acuerdo con Marcos Rodriguez, responsable
de la embarcación y de este proyecto, el 95 por cien-
to de la travesía se hizo a vela y el 5 por ciento res-
tante fue con ayuda de un motor y debido a las
fuertes corrientes el IATAIA encallo una vez, por lo
que requirieron asistencia y a la vez les sirvió para
conocer personas y lugares increíbles.
