Boat race Sydney Hobart
As a part of this adventures the crewmembers of the
IATAIA – Alexis, Alex, Carlos, Diego, Franco, Marc,
Marcos, Ricardo, and Victor – all Mexicans were ready
to cover the 628 nautical miles that comprise this
competition from the 26 to the 30 of December.
It has turned into one of the most famous boat
races and also one of the most demanding at a
worldwide level due, among other things, that you
must cross though the Strait of Bass, one of the
most dangerous places for the sail navigation.
The IATAIA was the first Mexican vessel to com-
pete – and finish - in this event during its 63 rd edi-
tion, which had 82 competitors and among them the
Mexican vessel entered in the 60th place. For this the
Mexican participants organized in guards of 4 people
in deck for four hours, adjusting and changing sails,
taking the helm, giving maintenance and making
counterweight, while the others rested in lapses of 4
hours time inwhichtheycouldeat andcleantheboat.
Without a doubt the trip and the competition
in the boat race mark a milestone in the Mexican
sailboats history competing at an international
level, demonstrating that the effort and the wish
of making things happen exists.

Como parte de esta aventura los tripulantes del IATAIA
– Alexis, Alex, Carlos, Diego, Franco, Marc, Marcos,
Ricardo, y Victor – todos mexicanos se aprestaron a
recorrer las 628 millas náuticas que comprenden esta
competencia del 26 al 30 de diciembre.
Convertida en una de las regatas más famosas y
también una de las más demandantes a nivel mun-
dial debido, entre otras cosas, a que se debe cruzar
por el estrecho de Bass uno de los lugares más peli-
grosos para la navegación a vela.
El IATAIA fue el primer barco mexicano en compe-
tir – y terminar - en este evento durante su 63
ª
edi-
ción, que tuvo a 82 competidores y entre los cuales
el barco mexicano entro en el lugar 60. Para ello los
participantes mexicanos se organizaban en guardias
de 4 personas en cubierta durante cuatro horas,
ajustando y cambiando velas, llevando el timón,
dando mantenimiento y haciendo contrapeso, mien-
tras los demás descansaban en lapsos de 4 horas
tiempo en el que podían comer y asear el barco.
Sin duda la travesía y la competencia en la regata
marcan un hito en la historia de veleros mexicanos
compitiendo a nivel internacional, demostrando que el
esfuerzo y las ganas de hacer las cosas existen.
