nmarcado por la belleza espectacular de un be-
llísimo amanecer en el Mar de Cortés, en la zona
de Bella Vista en Baja California Sur, arrancó el
Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament. A las 7:00am
las 61 embarcaciones que participaron en este torneo,
que tuvo lugar del 27 al 29 de julio en la siempre hermo-
sa locación del hotel Bella Vista, se encontraban listas
para recibir la bengala de salida; al momento de distin-
guir la señal convenida, las distintas tripulaciones deci-
dieron qué rumbo tomar para dirigirse a la posición que
creían les traería la mejor pesca. Dentro del contexto de
este torneo, el pez a conseguir puede ser el marlín, el
dorado o el atún, especies que alcanzan tallas conside-
rables en esta zona; los mejores pescadores del mundo
se reunieron bajo un clima ideal que nos permitió gozar
de un verdadero espectáculo.
Como siempre la pesca es incierta hasta que tienes
al pez en la línea; el primer día de pesca muy temprano,
alrededor de las 11:00 am cuando todavía no acababan
de salir las embarcaciones, nos sorprendieron Chucky
Van Wormer y su equipo a bordo de La Hielera & Co, al
aparecer con un marlín azul de 557 libras en la báscula,
con el que pusieron a sudar frío a todos los demás com-
petidores, ya que no hubo marlín que les ganara; esto
generó un gran
catch & release
, ya que desde hace varios
años se usan los anzuelos circulares, lo que le da más de
un 90%de probabilidad de supervivencia al pez liberado.

ramed by the spectacular beauty of a beau-
tiful sunrise over the Sea of Cortés, in the
area of Bella Vista in Baja California Sur,
started the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tourna-
ment. At 7:00 am the 61 boats that participated in
this tournament, which took place from 27 to 29
July at the location of the always beautiful hotel
Bella Vista, were ready to receive the flare-out; at
the time the agreed signal was seen, the various
crews decided what course to take to address the
position that they believed would bring the best
fishing. Within the context of this tournament
the fish to catch may be the marlin, dorado and
tuna, species that reach considerable size in this
area. The best fishermen in the world gathered
under perfect weather conditions allowing us to
enjoy a real spectacle.
As always fishing is uncertain until you have
the fish on the line. The first day of fishing very ear-
ly, around 11:00 AM when the boats haven’t all got
out yet, we were surprised by Chucky Van Wormer
and his crew aboard the Cooler & Co, to appear with a
blue marlin of 557 pounds on the scale, with which
all other competitors started to sweat, since there
was no marlin to beat that team, thus generating a
great catch and release because circle shaped hooks
have been used for several years now, giving more
