Con una singular pasión por las rutas comple-
jas, este navegante de Portonovo, Pontevedra,
España, continúa su travesía por el mar, sien-
do su constante reto el Ártico, y que no se rin-
de ante los obstáculos que le han hecho seguir
añorando metas.

eslora, a Leiro lo han azotado todo tipo de dificultades
en sus últimas rutas, donde pasa de la calidez del Cari-
be -a donde arriba por las Islas Canarias en referencia
a Colón-, hacia las gélidas aguas llenas de
icebergs
del
Círculo Polar Ártico; vientos desfavorables, complica-
ciones técnicas, impedimentos por parte de autorida-
des marítimas fronterizas, climatología extrema, entre
otros factores que han puesto a prueba el espíritu de
este intrépido e incansable navegante.
Desde sus inicios, Leiro ha experimentado todo
tipo de peligros, estando a punto de morir como
cuando encallara en el estrecho de Magallanes. En la
pasada década, logró navegar por más de un año y
medio ininterrumpido, cuando cruzara el Canal de
Panamá y se enfrentara a montañas de hielo que pa-
recían islas, todo para retornar a Portonovo, después
de haber cruzado el Salvador, Punta Arenas, Puerto
Montt, Antofagasta, Cuba, Ecuador, Perú, Bahamas y
las Bermudas.
“No hago rutas sensatas, me gustan las difíci-
les. No tengo remedio”, señala Suso Leiro. El último
reto ha sido superado: cruzó en Atlántico en solita-
rio, luego de casi ser arrollado por barcos mercantes
y luego de haberse tenido que refugiar en Madeira,
durante su intento en el verano, cuando el pésimo
clima le obligó a detenerse. En septiembre retomó la
mar desde Cabo Verde y en dirección a Canadá, para
retornar a España. El siguiente reto en el itinerario de
Leiro es salir de Portonovo y Sanxenxo para arribar a
Cuba y después a Miami. ¿Hasta dónde llegará este
conquistador del océano contemporáneo?
With a singular passion for the most complex route,
this Portonovo sailor -from Pontevedra,Spain-, con-
tinues his voyages with the constant challenge in
mind that represents the Arctic; he doesn’t give up
toward the obstacles that have make him long for
more accomplishments.
Aboard his already iconic sailship “Finesse”, of 8
m in length, Leiro has been beaten by all sorts of dif-
ficulties in his last maritime trips, he passes from the
warmth of the Caribbean - where he arrives through
the Canary Islands as a homage to Columbus-, toward
the icy waters full of icebergs of the Polar Arctic Circle;
unfavorable winds, technical complications, impedi-
ments of behalf of maritime border authorities, ex-
treme weather, amongst other factors have put to the
test the intrepid and indomitable spirit of this sailor.
Since it’s beginnings, Leiro has experimented
every type of danger, he has had several near deadly
experiences, almost encountering the end when he
shipwrecked at the Strait of Magellan. In the last de-
cade, he has sailed for over a year and a half uninter-
ruptedly; when he crossed the Panama Channel, he
encountered ice mountains the size of islands, all
so he could return to Portonovo, after crossing Sal-
vador, Punta Arenas, Montt Port, Antofagasta, Cuba,
Ecuador, Peru, Bahamas and Bermuda.
“I don’t make normal routs, I like the compli-
cated ones. I’m incorrigible”, Suso Leiro points
out. His last challenge has been accomplished: He
crossed the Atlantic sea alone, after almost being
hit by merchant boats and taking refuge in Madeira
during his Summer intent, when the climate forced
him to stop. In September he reached sea once more
fromCabo Verde in direction toward Canada in order
to head back to Spain. The next challenge in the itin-
erary of Suso Leiro is to exit Portonovo and Sanx-
enxo to arrive to Cuba and then Miami. Where will
this contemporary ocean conqueror go next?
