In Kapama Reserve I had the opportunity to
visit the Cheetah Rehabilitation Center, where I got
up close and personal with one of these majestic
animals, feeling its purrs on the palmof my hand as
I stroked his slender, spotted body. It was an extraor-
dinary sensation. From there, I visited a pack of wild
dogs – ferocious creatures – yet had the chance to
admire a profoundly prettier scenery once the sun
began to set, and had the chance to sip on a glass of
champagne in the midst of the savannah, before
mounting an elephant during a night journey.
Theseelephantshadbeenrescued fromZimbabwe,
where they were set to be slain. Thus, they were
transferred to the Kampala Reserve, the brainchild
of Lente Roode and her deceased husband, whomade
it their task to buy farms in the area and turn them
into what is now the Kampala Reserve. Lente and her
daughter, Adine, now manage the reserve and all
facilities in it. One of the elephants they helped to
rescue was a 12-year oldmale, Jabulani, who had be-
come stuck in amud pit. Unable to rescue him, it was
elefantes, jirafas, etc., y las noches se alumbraban
con inolvidables cenas a la luz de las antorchas bajo
un cielo blanco de estrellas mientras se oyen los
leones. En esa reserva visité el centro de recuperación
del Cheetah o guepardo donde me pude acercar a
ese magnífico felino con su adorable cara y su
cuerpo manchado.
Visité también los extraños perros salvajes, en
el atardecer que pinta de rojo el cielo, más tarde
me tenían la sorpresa de un soberbio aperitivo con
champaña en medio de la sabana antes de subirme
en unos elefantes amaestrados para dar un paseo
nocturno que permite acercarse a las bestias. Esos
elefantes habían sido rescatados de Zimbabue
donde los iban a sacrificar para comer y fueron
trasladados a la Reserva de Kapama.
Esa Reserva es la obra de Lente Roode y su difunto
esposo que fueron comprando granjas para volverlas
reserva privada. Ahora Lente y su hija Adine manejan
la reserva. Entre los elefantes, vive Jabulani,
un elefantito de 12 años que había sido rescatado del
