arrival of the Romans. It was then named a Procurator
(provincial government) and the majority of its mon-
uments where built between 30 B.C. and 110 A.D.
A majestic cobblestone avenue, lined with
grandiose buildings with columns and fountains,
descends to the impressive Celsus library with its two
floors adorned with columns. Immersed in this splen-
did ambiance, your mind drifts and, in the unknown,
discovers the images of this city that was once
extraordinarily beautiful
Its theater, that still holds 24,000 people, hosts an
annual May festival. The gymnasium and baths are in
the lower part, near the sea and the port that wit-
nessed the arrival of galleons from which people and
merchandise disembarked. However, as time went by,
the sea withdrew and the port silted up.
Ephesus was also an important Christian city and
it grew with the creation of Selçuk, a Byzantine city.
There, we visited the basilica of Saint John, where he
is interred, the citadel and aqueduct. In the nearby
hills, covered with pines, we found the home where it
is believe the Virgin Mary lived during her pilgrimage
with Saint John. The small stone house is a magical
place, full of symbolism and strong vibes, where
many believe they can be cured.
Before returning to our sailboat, we traveled120km
(14.5 miles) to reach Pamukkale, near Denizli, a spot
where calcium-rich water surges from the ground at
35 °C. Here, there are natural pools that adorn the
white, terraced hills. It is a natural Spa, visited since
ancient times, exceptionally beautiful and very
crowded in the summer.
The whole region is an invitation to discover
many archeological sites but we returned to Izmir to
begin our journey along the coast, going around the
peninsula, a place where you will find the best beach-
es on what is called the Turkish Riviera. Cesme,
adorned with a 14th century castle, 15th century
durante siglos, recibió a Alejandro Magno con grandes
festejos y sus años dorados empezaron con la llegada
de los romanos. Fue entonces nombrada sitio del “Pro-
curator” o gobernador provincial, y la mayoría de los
monumentos que se ven ahora fueron construidos en-
tre los años 30 a.C. y 110 d.C.
Una majestuosa avenida empedrada, bordeada de
ostentosos edificios con columnas y fuentes, baja hacia
la impresionante biblioteca de Celsus, con sus dos pisos
adornados de columnas, e inmersa entre esos suntuo-
sos monumentos la mente vaga para descubrir en lo
desconocido las imágenes de esa ciudad que fue ex-
traordinariamente bella.
En su teatro, que todavía puede sentar 24,000 per-
sonas, se realiza el festival de mayo. El gimnasio y sus
baños se encuentran en la parte baja, donde estaba el
mar y su puerto que veía llegar las galeras, desembarcar
gente y mercancías, pero con el paso de los siglos el mar
se ha retirado y el puerto se ha rellenado naturalmente.
Éfeso también fue una importante ciudad cristiana,
y se extendió con la creación de la ciudad bizantina de
Selçuk, donde visitamos la basílica de San Juan, con la
tumba del santo, su ciudadela y acueducto. En las coli-
nas cercanas cubiertas de pinos, encontramos la casa
de la Virgen María, donde se cree que vivió ella en su
peregrinación junto con San Juan. Lugar mágico, lleno
de simbolismo, la casita de piedra transmite una fuerte
sensación y muchos creen que tiene poderes curativos.
Antes de regresar a nuestro velero recorrimos 120 km
para alcanzar el sitio de Pamukkale, cerca de Denizli, don-
de el agua brota de la tierra a 35 °C y cargada de calcio. Allí
se han creado unos estanques naturales que adornan la
colina con sus blancas terrazas. Es un spa original, visi-
tado desde la antigüedad, excepcionalmente extraño y
bello, muy concurrido en el verano.
Toda la región invita a descubrir gran cantidad de
sitios arqueológicos, pero regresamos a Izmir para em-
prender nuestra ruta costera, contorneando, la penín-
sula, donde se alojan las mejores playas de lo que
