lamente de un corazón finlandés sino
también alma de Finlandia”. Aquí hay
un arte de valor intrínseco y sustan-
cioso, en vez de exhibicionismo virtuosísimo. Téc-
nica de exhibicionismo brillante y revolucionario
con experimentación constante. Esta música es
absolutamente moderna en espíritu, cultivada no en
un invernadero sino en el suelo nativo, y fijado en la
tierra de Finlandia con largo alcance, firmeza y raíces
profundamente arraigadas.
Sibelius nació en Hämmeenlinna (Tavastehus),
Finlandia el 8 de diciembre de 1865 y este año será
el más festejado de compositores distinguidos. Fue
hijo de un médico del regimiento y en su noveno año
empezó sus estudios de piano, aunque pronto diri-
gió su interés al violín. A los diez años compuso su
primera pieza musical, un dueto para violín y chelo.
Siendo alumno del Liceo Model Finlandés, enriqueció
sus estudios aplicándose a la teoría. En 1885, llegó
a Helsinki para estudiar derecho en la universidad;
después de un año abandonó las leyes y se concentró
en la música. Se inscribió en el Instituto de Música, en
donde Ferruccio Busoni estaba entre sus maestros,
quien realizaba una visita a Finlandia. Durante este
periodo, publicó en 1888 su primera composición (una
canción) y escuchó el estreno de su Tema y Variaciones
para cuarteto de cuerdas.

revolutionary experimentation. Here is music
thoroughly modern in spirit, grown not in a hot-
house but from its native soil, and fixed in the
soil of Finland with far reaching, firm and dense-
ly knotted roots.
Sibelius
was
born
in
Hämmeenlinna
(Travastehus),Finlandia on december 8 of 1865 y
this year we celebrate 150 a life of genius and rare
imagination. he son of a regimental doctor which in
his ninth year, started studying the piano, but soon
transferred to the violin, at ten he wrote his first
piece of music, a Duet for violin and cello. While
attending the Finnish Model Lyceum , he supple-
mented violin lessons with the study of theory. In
1885 he came to Helsinki to study Law at the Uni-
versity. After a single year, he dropped lae to con-
centrate on music. He enrolled in the Institute of
Music, where his teachers included Ferruccio Buso-
ni. Busoni was visiting Finland. During this period
in 1888,he published his first composition (a song)
and had one of his works played for the first time, a
Theme and Variations fo String Quartet.
