I
remember it as if it were yesterday; the first
time I saw and swamwith a whale sharkwas
in the incredible Sea of Cortés. It was a
young and very friendly male. From that same
moment, I remained in awe of these inoffensive
marine beings and I promised myself to learn
more about this species. Life has given me the
opportunity to observe theminother parts of the
world such as the Galapagos, Cocos, Malpelo and
Revillagigedo.
On researching a little more into whale
sharks, I learned that in the neighboring country
of Belize, there is a place where these great ani-
mals congregate every year to feed on the eggs of
the cubera snapper. That is why I am now aboard
an airplane heading towards the capital of Belize
to catch another flight that will take us to the
small town of Plasencia, almost on the frontier
with Honduras, where we will spend the whole
weekend diving and looking for whale sharks. On
this trip, I am lucky enough to have the generous

ecuerdo como si hubiera sido ayer, la primera vez
que vi un tiburón ballena y nadé junto a él fue en
el increíble Mar de Cortés, era un macho joven y
muy amigable. Desde ese momento quedé maravillado
con esos inofensivos seresmarinos yme propuse cono-
cer más sobre esta especie. La vida me dio la oportuni-
dad de observarlos en otras partes del mundo, como
Galápagos, Cocos, Malpelo y Revillagigedo.
Al investigar más sobre los tiburones ballena me
enteré de que en el vecino país de Belice existe un
lugar donde estos grandes peces se dan cita, año
tras año, para alimentarse de la hueva de los peces
conocidos como pargos cuberas. Por ese motivo
ahora me encuentro en el avión que nos transporta-
rá a la capital de Belice, para desde ahí tomar otro
avión que nos llevará al pequeño poblado de
Plasencia, casi en la frontera con Honduras. Ahí pasa-
remos el fin de semana buceando y buscando a los
tiburones ballena. En este viaje tengo la suerte de
tener como compañeros al generoso Adrián Sada y al
inquieto Alejandro Ruiz.
